Has anyone ever gotten just medical insurance when traveling internationally? We usually get travelers insurance, but think that getting just medical insurance is practical for us. We will both be on Medicare at the time of our next trip.
Do you have a supplemental Medicare policy or Medicare Advantage? If so, there is a possibility you do have health care coverage overseas already. Step one: find out what you already have. No one here on the forum can tell you. You have to research your own individual policies.
My regular insurance covers me overseas, so this is not something I've had to research. However, I remember multiple posts mentioning GeoBlue, which I think is related to Blue Cross / Blue Shield. You can probably find those posts via the Search function.
I had regular BC/BS insurance for many years, and I found the company relatively easy to deal with, as insurance companies go. I don't know whether your experience with GeoBlue would mirror mine with BC/BS.
I buy medical/repatriation insurance through GeoBlue. Our Medicare Advantage plan does not include coverage outside the US and we self insure for the trip costs unless it’s a tour.
We have BC/BS that covers us when overseas, however, many foreign countries if you need hospitalization, they don't wait for insurance to pay, they need payment up front.
For that reason, I purchase from AmEx medical coverage and medical evacuation coverage for our trip. It usually costs about $60 for $100,000 coverage for both of us for a month.
