Overseas Delivery of a New Car

My wife and I are considering taking overseas delivery of a new Volvo. The company offers a number of incentives in addition to a reasonable savings over purchasing the car off of a dealer's lot in the U.S. We would use the car for three or four weeks before returning it for shipping home. I would like to hear the experience of others that have done this, good and bad, so as we can weigh all aspects of doing this.

I looked into doing this with a BMW but decided that wasn't the kind of car I wanted. I have a good friend who picked up his Volvo over there and he had a great experience.

My experience also was a positive one. Although a long time ago---1979.

I took my car from the Fiat dealer in Paris and drove it 4,000 miles through 10 countries without problem. I had to have the oil changed in Vienna on schedule.

Because I bought it through a New York wholesaler, I had to arrange for shipment with an exporter in London, but my car arrived on time and without a scratch.

Do a search in the box at the top right corner of this page. Read the archives.

I have read experiences of others on this page with buying ?Peugeots, but not Volvos. Scan this page carefully.

I bought a Volvo in 2006 directly from the factory. I bought it under a special program for US military members. Volvo will ship our car to the US for free once we move back to the us. We have a S40, turbo, stick, bright red. I love my car and I love that I had it built exactly how I wanted.
Your only worry should be that you may get a ding or two in it. In Italy it is just a fact of life that your new car will get dinged up.

Kevin,
My husband and I did a European delivery in 2007. We bought a BMW and picked it up in Munich and visited Austria, Switzerland and Gemany. It was a blast driving on the autobahn. I loved it and I want to do it again. We saved enough to pay for our two week stay in Europe. I think it wasabout 7%. I hear that Volvo has a nice package for the European delivery. I would book hotels that have secured garage parking and I would stay away from pedestrian only towns. I felt better knowing that my new car was safe in the garage and not parked on the street.
