We have 2 1/2 days in Frankfurt. Have a car. Besides a day trip to Heidelberg what other towns would be fun to explore?
Here's a long list, with a brief description of each. I'll skip the Rhine, because someone else will surely go into enough detail. Darmstadt- Jugendstil and a former royal capital Ladenburg- Walled old town near Heidelberg Heppenheim and Weinheim- preserved wine towns, with castles, just north of Heidelberg Wiesbaden- Beautiful thermal resort Michelstadt and Erbach- walled town and palace town, respectively, deep within the legend-filled Odenwald region Miltenburg- attractive old town on a scenic bend of the Main river, castle, old stone bridge, remains of Roman fortresses sprinkled throughout the woods in the hills above Speyer- well-preserved Rhine city with a gigantic Romanesque cathedral Neckar River Valley- (near Heidelberg) very similar to the well-known Rhine valley, with many scenic towns and castles Königstein im Taunus and Kronberg im Taunus- wealthy, scenic spa suburbs of Frankfurt up in the Taunus mountains Bad Homburg- ditto above, but at the base of the mountains; has a large palace complex Büdigen- old walled medieval town north of Frankfurt Hessenpark- open-air folk museum Marburg- beautiful, well-preserved university town that wraps around a central hill with a castle and park on top Wetzlar- scenic old town Fritzlar- old walled medieval town in the Waldeck region of northern Hessen; high density of castles in the area Idstein- scenic old town with a castle in the middle Limburg an der Lahn- town with a unique cathedral sitting prominently on a hill Großer Feldberg- the highest mountain in the area, offers a great view on a clear day; you can drive to the top, I can think of even more, but that's enough for now.
