OPEC Replacement

There are many here who are looking for a very lightweight, very inexpensive convertible bag for travel. We used to have the OPEC bag which seems to no longer be manufactured.

I came across this bag. It is slightly smaller than the OPEC, about the size of the RS Appenzell, weighs slightly more but costs just over $20.

(Yes, I'm aware it weighs more than the Appenzell but it is less than half the price and has hideaway backpack straps.)

Goodhope Convertible

Does anyone else know of a very lightweight, very inexpensive bag that can also be considered as an OPEC replacement?

Hey, Frank, I like it. I've got my weight down so far I can live with a few more oz. Best thing, I like the straight side (maximizes volume in the LWH constraints) and the one large compartment, so I can organize freely. I think some people might have trouble staying in the 1400 sq in volume, but it definitely is within carryon limits. It might be a little bigger inside than the Appenzell bag since it doesn't look like it tapers.

Why don't you get one, since it's so cheap, and report back to us?

I've seriously considered doing that. I've got so many backpacks, an original (series 2000) RS Convertible bag (2 actually, one for my wife), an OPEC bag, and Appenzell day bag, and, most recently, a Velocé Travel Pack. If it weren't for all of the outside pockets, which just use up the allowable dimensions and add weight, without contributing to usable space, the Velocé bag would be my ideal. It doesn't have hide-away straps, but the open pocket that runs half-way up the back does do a pretty good job of holding them, and I really like the sternum strap.
