Oops, I forgot about Schengen

Like many others, I am looking forward to returning to Europe. It has been nearly a year and a half since I've used my passport.

Normally, I take an international trip between October and early January. This year, I plan to go on a trip I was planning for last fall--mostly Northern Mediterranean. I also thought I'd hop over this summer because, well, just because.

And then I remembered Schengen. 90 out of 180. If I travel to a Schengen country this summer, I will have to cut out some of my trip this fall. In all my excitement of traveling internationally, I forgot the rules.

So Schengen will have to wait until this fall. I'm hoping, that by August, the UK will open and I can spend some time there and in Ireland. (Ireland opens mid July and it looks like the UK may push back it's opening for four weeks. That's why I said August.)

So, to those who run Schengen my suggestion is to let us temporarily stay longer than 90 in 180 to make up for lost time. We promise to spend more money. :)

Hee hee, that would be a good idea on the part of the Schengen authorities — to let people spend longer once they have jumped the hoops to get here this time (and help the participating countries make up some of those America tourist dollars!). Great idea!

it looks like the UK may push back it's opening for four weeks.

The restrictions which will or won't come off in a week or 5 weeks or whenever have nothing to do with the process of travel.

The Green/Amber/Red system with quarantine and testing for incoming to the UK isn't going away. And isn't balance wonderful? The US is not admitting travellers from the UK - not unless your President made a very recent announcement...

Not all of Europe is in Schengen. Why not hit a country further east this summer? Though I didn't review their US citizen entries or know your criteria. Just saying, there may be options yet.

MariaF, actually the no Schenley countries are for the most part easier to enter for US citizens.

But you have to enjoy what they have to offer.

I will be hitting 3 of them in a few weeks.

But it's what I love.

Frank, just remind those at the border of U.S. contributions during the 20th century and beyond, and then walk through like you own the place.
