One free week between Berlin and Athens--what to do?

Working my way from Copenhagen, to Hamburg and Berlin.
I will be leaving Berlin on Oct 8 and meeting my wife in Athens on Oct 14.

After we do the Greek Isles thing, I'm flying to Budapest for a few days.

Some of my thoughts--

Train to visit Krakow and Warsaw

Fly to Milan, go to LaSpezia and Cinque Terra, maybe add Pisa
(Been just about everywhere else in Italy)

Train to other cities SW of Berlin-Dresden, Nuremberg, Leipzig, etc..
(Been to Prague and Munich a few times)

I enjoy meeting people, learning the history, sampling the food, local tours,
and walking/hiking. I think I'm burned out on museums and cathedrals.

Any suggestions will be very much appreciated!

How about Nuremberg to Vienna to Budapest?
Or Leipzig to Nuremberg to Vienna. Vienna has direct flights to Athens.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I updated my original post to show that I'm going to Budapest at the end of my trip.
Been to Vienna, but will definitely check out the other cities in Germany.

Then maybe Leipzig to Nuremberg to Regensburg. You can get a train direct from Regensburg to Munich airport for a flight to Athens.

Go to google flights, put in Berlin to Europe, non-stop under $100 and write down the options
Then from Athens and do the same.

Any location that shows up on both lists is an option.

Frankfurt is worth 2-3 days and add on for day trips to Mainz, Wiesbaden, Buedingen.

So I took your advice, looked at direct flights from Berlin, under $100. Skopje and Tirana popped up. Then I looked at Athens, Thessaloniki and Tirana popped up.

So . . . . Fly from Berlin to Skopje, bus/train to Tirana, fly to Thessaloniki, fly to Athens?

Not been to Pristina, should I fit that in?

Thanks!!

P.S. No one has mentioned Poland????

Pristina is very interesting and its sort of on the way to the Albanian alps which I found very beautifula nd very much worth the effort to see. Surporised you got so few hits though on the googleflights. I would have guessed more options. I am guessing you already have the plane flights in and out or I would say reorganize to do Budapest in the middle, thats where it makes a lot of sense and there are discount flights that make the connections Berlin to Athens.....

Great advice. I was limited on my flights out of Berlin because I can't leave until the afternoon. My Budapest to Atlanta flight is in basic economy, it would be expensive to change it now. :-(
