Offline GPS iPhone App vs GPS Device

We plan to drive a rental car in northern Netherlands. We have a Garmin GPS device, but we would like to use our iPhone 6 instead. Since there are so many offline GPS apps available, does anyone have experience using a particular one? Google Maps? Maps.Me? Navmii? Do these iPhone apps (when maps are downloaded ahead of time) work as well as a GPS device? Thank you!

We used HERE Maps on our recent trip and it worked flawlessly (on Android). I see it is also available on iOS.

I've been using Copilot at home to get used to it prior to a trip to France. I'd say it works pretty much the same as a GPS (a plus, the maps are up to date). The biggest shortcoming is the screen size is noticable for me. I have to stop and look to see a lot of the information that is more readily available on my GPS. Some of that is me, I need reading glasses now, so if it's small, it's a problem. Otherwise, the use is pretty much the same as the Garmins and TomToms I've had.

We are in Europe now and have been using city maps 2 go. I marked all of our hotels and sites we were going to ahead of time. We have found it VERY helpful. We have only used it walking in cities though, not driving.

I used Google Maps offline in Ireland and it was excellent. Of course, I downloaded the maps ahead of time. But when we wre driving, we were offline and we still got voice, turn-by-turn directions. Even more remarkable, it would correct us and give new routing if we made a wrong turn while still offline. One tip, be sure to have it plugged into the car power supply even if it's offline--it uses a lot of juice.

My son used his IPhone offline GPS that he said came on the phone? I don't know the name of the app but he used it and never got lost. I was with him. I was impressed!

I've had great luck using Google maps offline. Note that sometimes it can have trouble in dense urban areas, so it's a good idea to study the intermediate cities and route numbers.

I use a Kenu Airframe mount to hook my phone on one of the vents, so I can see it easily hands free.
