Odd Expiration Dates For Global Entry

There has been a number of recent discussions concerning Global Entry applications, interviews, etc. While we have had ours for a couple of years, it did peak my interest about when GE expires and renewal. I thought it was five years and we may have to reapply in a couple of years.

Today I pulled our Global Entry documents. Both our Global Entry was issue on May 3, 2013. So you think we are good till 2018 - 5 years. Not quite - my actually expires on my birthday, May 31, 2018. Marcia expires on her birthday in Jan, 2019. That is very odd that it is tied to a birthday. Our passports are good for ten years from the date of issue so why is Global Entry tied to a birthday? When we renew passports, we send them in together. One deadline, one worry. But with our GE expirations being eight months apart, it just adds a little complication.

Drivers license expiration dates appear to be tied to a birthday (at least in my state), so it doesn't seem that odd...and birthdays are easier to remember than random dates in terms of renewal. The birthdate can also be a secondary identifier in the database(s) that your info goes through and will match up with the one in your passport (unless they use social security numbers instead). Since you're getting more than 5 years worth of Global Entry based on the birthday dates, it seems worth the "little complication".

Mine expires on my birthday as well.

Since I applied and received my GE clearance in February and my birthday is not until December, I got nearly a whole extra year.

MrsEB, I don't understand your description of the process. Maybe you can edit that.

What I understood my Global Entry "interviewer" to say last month was that if my passport changed, I would just have to go into my online GOES account to update that information.

Washington State Drivers' Licenses are another ID example that renew on birthdays.

My experience on the "passport expiring" discussion with the officer/agent was the same as Laura's. My passport expires in 2020 and I've got the GOES until my birthday in 2021. He told me the same thing...just log in to my goes account and change my PP # in there and it will update to match that passport.

I can verify what Laura and Pam posted, as I had to renew my passport after I entered the GE program--just went to my GOES account online, updated the passport number and expiration date, and that was it.

Agreeing with Laura, Pam, and Eric on the passport renewal vs GE renewal. You just update your passport info in your GOES account that's created when you applied for GE.

Just don't let your passport completely expire. I am not totally sure, but have heard from coworkers that if you do not have a current valid passport, your GE can be cancelled.

MrsEB, I don't know what would happen to your Global Entry account if you allowed your passport to expire and did not renew it--perhaps the agent was correct about that situation though, again, I have no experience with this. However, there was either a misunderstanding or the agent you spoke with was wrong regarding what occurs when your passport is renewed for, as noted above, I have had to do this, and it was done easily online at the GOES site.

MrsEB,

Your interviewer's comments don't make sense ...

I've had Global Entry since 2012. When I had to renew my passport in 2015, I simply logged onto the GOES website and updated my new passport info. I had no problem using Global Entry with the new passport following the update.

I think Laura is correct according to my recent experience. With all of this discussion about the GOES account, I actually logged into the account even though I had completely forgotten that I had created an account with the original application. Fortunately I keep a log of these things. When I logged in I noticed that my driver license information had an old expiration date. It was easy to correct so I assume the same thing would happen with a renewed passport. Log in, change the number and the new dates of issue and expiration. And obviously you can change your address if you move.

In my original post I just thought it was odd that the expiration date was tied to a birth date when the passport is not since those two documents are tied together for this program. I recognize that most drivers licenses are tied to birth dates but that was not the question.

Then I decided to see what was required for renewal and found this statement --

The Renew Membership button will only be displayed when the membership is eligible to be renewed.

But no indication as to when the renewal window opens. I guess we will just have to stumble along. I think the GOES program is less than five years old so probably the renew system is under development. Or is it older than I think it is. Has anyone renewed Global Entry?

Lots or reasons - the program is new and still evolving. Maybe your didn't understand her response. Maybe she didn't understand your question, and may be she didn't know. Maybe you heard what you want to hear. I still would like to hear from someone who has renewed GE.

I'm just very pleasantly surprised that everyone is getting their full 5 (AND MORE!) years; I fully expected to be cheated on that first 5 (until that first renewal/reset date on your birthday)...

The Canadian Nexus expires on your birthday, five years in the future. If you get a new passport, all you need to do is go online to your GE/Nexus account and change the passport info. It's important to do that or you will be detained by the Border Service.

To help clear up the confusion, straight from the CBP web site:

"I received a new passport do I need to apply again for a new Trusted Traveler Program membership?

As a Trusted Traveler, you may update your passport (and driver's license, visa status, and mail-to address) through your GOES account. This can only be done if it is a renewal of a passport currently associated with your account and does not include a name change in the updated passport"

So if you sign up shortly after your birthday, you get most of a year for free? :-)
