We will be connecting in Chicago from a United flight (terminal 1) to a Scandinavian Airlines flight in Intl terminal 5. Will we be able to connect within "secured area", or will we need to go through security again?

Terminal 5 is a completely separate building, so you will have to go through security again.
As Nancy says, different building. Be sure to have plenty of time between flights. It can take awhile to get between terminals and flights are often delayed at O'Hare.
O'Hare has an above ground tram system to move between terminals. Just follow the signs (and perhaps the large group of people also headed for the tram). The signs have a picture of subway/train car/tram type thing on it. It will only be a 5 minute-ish ride to Terminal 5. The security lines at Terminal 5 can be particularly long. I don't think they have as many scanners as at the other terminals. How much time do you have between flights?
Thanks for the replies. I flew in/out of Ohare this past week, and notice how far the Intl terminal seemed, so that's what prompted my question.
We have a 2 1/2 hour layover, so should be plenty of time. We are flying business (miles) so I'm assuming there will be a premier line of some sort. If we are really lucky, our boarding passes will get marked TSApre, but not sure if that's only for domestic or international flights also.
That will be plenty of time especially since you will be able to go through the Priority lines. I am not sure if there is a TSA precheck at Terminal 5. I haven't flown out of that terminal in several years. But you will be fine on time. Have a great trip!
For what it is worth, I have noticed on the few occassions I have had to do this at O'hare that airport personnel will go through the security line announcing flights boarding and moving those people holding tickets to the front.
I've flown out of ORD Int'l every couple of years for some time now, and twice in the last year. My flights have usually been between 8 and 10 p.m. and I've never spent more than 15 minutes in line for security. The good news is that in the last 3-4 years, a lot more shops and a couple of restaurants/bars have opened on the "far" side of security, so at least there's something to do.
