I looked last week for some friends to join me in Italy and Germany this september. Besides the round trip multi city, I looked at 2 one way tickets to Milan and return from Frankfurt. We got $1400 for the multi city round trip, but the One way tickets came out to over $3,000.

Drive over to Orlando and airfares can run as low as 50% of the fares you quoted. Norwegian Air Shuttle has set'em on their ears, and they can transfer travelers to other cities after arriving in Europe.

The article says what I pretty much always think, competition is good for the consumer. The big airlines are trying to be competitive where they have to be while still getting more where they can.

When their seats go unsold, regardless of any other pricing strategy, however, the prices will drop. Half price is better than what an empty seat pays.

I can't complain. I bought my round trip to Paris this coming September for $500 (closer to $600 when little add-ons like seat-selection are included). It's on Wow air. I have to fly through Iceland, but the trip isn't longer than any other one-stop flight.
