Am just beginning plans for a trip to Africa and looking for some suggestions as to location and time of year. A group of photographers (pro and amateur) want to photograph and just enjoy life, and culture. Obviously, a part of the trip would involve safari, but would also like some suggestions of someplace else that might be interesting. Thanks for any insight.
To clothe thyself for such a journey see Tag Safari Clothing in internet.
I don't understand why a trip to Africa has to "obviously" include a safari. There are such beautiful, vibrant parts of Africa that have nothing to do with animals. Ethiopia, Ghana, Senegal, Mozambique, for example. I lived in Africa for 7 years and went on safari once to Kenya (Masai Mara) - just wasn't my thing. For the best photos - give me a good market and some smiling faces anyday.
I would recommend watching the "Long Way Down" with Ewewn McGregor and Charlie Boorman (SP?). Its on Netflix. Its a flim diary of their exploits riding motorcycles from Scotland to Cape Town, South Africa. The stoped at national parks, small villages, and charity organizations on thier journey. They might be able to give you ideas on where to go. I would do an online search for each country you think you want to visit to see what is thier.
Good luck with the planning
Terry kathryn, The Instructor for one of the photographic workshops I've taken also used to offer workshops in Namibia. The Skeleton Coast area seems to be an especially good area for photo op's, with old ghost towns and the wrecks of ships. Unfortunately, that Instructor seems to have moved on to other pursuits so I don't think he's doing workshops any longer. This video will give you an idea of the Workshop in that area: www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTyzC-S-2Nk The TV show Don't Forget Your Passport did an episode on Namibia a couple of years ago, and they also covered that area. You may get that show on one of your local stations? From watching the program, my impression was that it would be a good idea to hire a local tour firm, especially as some areas are only accessible by 4 x 4. Happy travels!
Thanks for the leads on where to start looking for locations. @Monte... I was going to look at Out of Africa again for my clothing:))
@Emily....I know Africa is more than animals. I have been to northern. I don't care a ton about animals myself, but as we are doing this as a photo tour it will be important to some, and the woman I am doing the photo instruction with lived in Africa as well and loves photographing animals. But, that is why I asked for other locations... @Janet & Ken... thanks... just what I was looking for.
The only photos hanging in my house are photos that I took on a trip to South Africa and Botswana. I am not a photographer at all ... just someone with a point and shoot camera who tends to take rather poorly composed photos. Even my photos from that trip came out beautifully. I thought the area surrounding Cape Town was simply stunning in terms of natural beauty ... the Cape Peninsula, the Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens, the penguins on Boulders Beach, Robben Island, whales off hte coast of Hermanus, the wine region with some absolutely gorgeous estates, etc.. I only spent 4 days there but jam-packed my time with day trips. I think I could have spent a couple of weeks exploring that area. Some day I will return. Just google photos from some of these places and I think you will be convinced. In Botswana, the wildlife in the Okavango Delta as well as at Mashatu in the Tuli Block was just incredible.
@Laura.. what time of year did you go? Sounds like someplace I would love.
