Nook in Europ

My wife just got a good deal on a new Nook. I know very little about it. It can retrieve our email, but I don't know about apps. and connectivity seems very limited. Do we have any Nook experts out there? What can I do with this thing?

David I have a Nook but have not travelled with it outside of US yet. As far as I can tell, as long as you have access to unsecured WiFi, it should work like any tablet. If connected, you can browse internet using google chrome as with any tablet, or email as you know. I haven't found any apps I need yet. I have downloaded some In Your Pocket Guides for upcoming trip, and you could download maps and RS guides if you want. I assume there is a GPS app that might be useful, but I think a Smartphone makes a better choice for that than the eBook.. Connectivity is usually an issue with whatever router you are connecting with not the device itself. Check your Settings for WiFi. Not very intuitive set up I will agree.

David, The one thing you can't do on the nook is order books when you are outside of the USA. Order all your reading material and then some before you go. Wray

Well, I haven't figured out how to check out and download free "library books" from the Digital eLibrary without using a computer. However you can purchase on the Nook using the "shop" button from Barnes and Noble. I purchased a digital guide to Berlin that way using the hotel's wifi. Biggest drawbacks: digital guidebooks are hard for me to use - harder to jump from one chapter to another, maps don't enlarge, etc. Biggest pluses: you can carry multiple books for pleasure reading, and some apps are outstanding. My favorites were the Trip Advisor City Guides. The Berlin one was more accurate than the MuseumPass booklet for finding the Computer Games museum! Also downloaded several of Rick's walking tours in advance and enjoyed exploring with Rick's voice pointing out the sights. Add a few games, a weather app, and some lessons in French and I found it worth the weight. Hope this helps, have a great trip!
