Reno Tahoe International (!) Airport was proud to announce bi-weekly nonstop flights to London Gatwick on Thomas Cook Airlines starting in December 2015. It would be great for the area as the English are used to flying oversears for both gambling and skiing anyway.
However, the US Customs and Border Protection wasn't able to allocate a sufficient amount of staff. Immigration would always have taken up to three hours - Thomas Cook didn't want their passengers to being exposed to such an endurance and the flights were cancelled before they even started.
Now only Volaris from Mexico serves Reno directly.
Maybe a little less bureaucracy and a little more entrepreneur's thinking, even from a government body, would have helped the area develop into an international ski and entertainment center...
