Nonstop from Reno to London.... NOT

Reno Tahoe International (!) Airport was proud to announce bi-weekly nonstop flights to London Gatwick on Thomas Cook Airlines starting in December 2015. It would be great for the area as the English are used to flying oversears for both gambling and skiing anyway.

However, the US Customs and Border Protection wasn't able to allocate a sufficient amount of staff. Immigration would always have taken up to three hours - Thomas Cook didn't want their passengers to being exposed to such an endurance and the flights were cancelled before they even started.

Now only Volaris from Mexico serves Reno directly.

Maybe a little less bureaucracy and a little more entrepreneur's thinking, even from a government body, would have helped the area develop into an international ski and entertainment center...

Almost as bad as passengers on the Eurostar having to check-in 30 minutes before departure because the British government refuses to do on train passport checks, and instead insists on passport checks at the station before getting on the train.
And more, for trains from the south of France (Avignon etc.), passengers have to get off the train in Lille to go through passport control, then get back on again.

There is no will power to fund agencies 100%, so all hours and pay have been cut for the last year, including passport control. The government employees have been making a heroic effort on reduced pay and hours.

Perhaps the development of an ecologically fragile area into a ski and tacky (my opinion) entertainment center isn't the most important value in the world. And what a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth we'd be hearing if insufficient security led to terrorist incidents.
