Non-US credit cards

I've read lots now about the problems of US credit cards in Europe, but as I'm from New Zealand, does anyone have any insight into how our credit cards perform there? I think what I have is a Visa credit card that is not a chip-and-pin type (as I can't see a chip anywhere) but I do have a PIN on it. Also, if anyone has information about using NZ debit cards in Europe, that would be appreciated as well!

If it's something like a VISA it'll probably be ok. It would probably to talk to your bank though and ask if anyone has ever had trouble using their card overseas.

We ran into some trouble with the chip and pin card issue during our recent trip in the Baltics. It seems that experienced cashiers have no trouble, they just process it as "no pin" and it spits out a slip for you to sign. Others weren't used to the idea and told us we couldn't use our cards. We tried to order a pin before we left but didn't get it in time so I can't say whether a pin will work without the chip or not (I'm guessing it will - just like using a debit card).

Diane, It appears that "chip & PIN" credit cards ARE available in New Zealand. If there's sufficient time, you might request an early renewal on your present card, and have it replaced with the newer model. That way you'll have no worries about using it in Europe. WestPac seems to be one agency that offers these. If you have a look at * www.westpac.co.nz/olcontent/olcontent.nsf/Content/Credit+cards *, all of the credit cards shown are the "chip & PIN" type. I thought this would be a good suggestion, as I did the same thing - my Bank kindly upgraded my Visa card when I told them I'd be travelling overseas. Cheers!

That's awesome, Ken. Thanks for the tip! I'll give my bank a ring.
