I got a neato new Kindle for my trip to Europe next month after reading all the comments in the technology section (someplace). After all the great recommendations for ETBD, I was going to buy it. Seems that this is the only Rick Steves book that isn't an ebook. Very disappointed. I didn't see any Netherlands ebooks by RS either. :(
There is no point in bring ETBD to Europe. Read the book, before going. Ideally before planning the trip.
Maybe I just want to read it at home on my Kindle.
I agree, it doesn't appear to be available. Unfortunately, the publishing of the books and e-books is somewhat removed from the RS operation. Publishing is handled by Avalon. http://www.travelmatters.com/home.php I have no idea whether they handle the e-books in-house or outsource it.
Carole, AFAIK, the only "Netherlands" Guidebook available from RS is the Amsterdam - Bruges - Brussels book. It's available both in print version and E-book version, including Kindle. The current edition won't be updated until 2013. Although the title seems to imply that it only covers those three locations, the book actually has information on other areas in the Netherlands and Belgium (I have a copy of the newest edition sitting beside me, so I just checked). As you noted, Europe Through The Back Door isn't currently available in E-book format, except in the Barnes & Noble Nook format. The current edition of the print version is scheduled to be updated on August 9, 2011, and I suspect they may be waiting to release the E-book version in other formats at the same time. If you want to read ETBD prior to your trip, the only suggestion I have is to try your local Library. Cheers!
