Nightjet for 3 people sleeping arrangements

Has anyone taken Nightjet (not the swanky new ones, the regular ones) with 3 people?

Options are a 3-person sleeper (looks snug) or a 4-person couchette reserved for a small upcharge as a private compartment.

Cost appears to be about the same. Of course (with an upcharge) the 3-person sleeper could have a bathroom. But it really looks snug to get 3 adults in there.

The trip would be in late May, 3 middle-aged travelers. Thoughts?

The most challenging part of the snug sleeping compartments is when the traveler on the top bunk has to visit the restroom in the wee hours. They have to climb down from their bunk without stepping on the person below them! It can be done, though.

I have, with two friends from Vienna to Venice. For context, this was in the fall of 2019 and we are all three females, two of us at the time in our early sixties and one friend in her early seventies. We booked a four person couchette and had it to ourselves for maybe two or three hours, but then the 4th person arrived, a guy probably in his 30's. He ended up leaving for several hours and came back in time for the included continental breakfast. When I made the reservations, the option of having the 4 person couchette as a private compartment wasn't available. Having the extra space in a four person couchette would be nice and I would probably pick that option over having the three person sleeper, even with a bathroom included.

We once traveled as a family of 4 in a couchette car from Munich to Rome and I traveled from Munich to Amsterdam with my 2 teenagers in a sleeping car compartment for 3 people.

A private compartment in a couchette car definitely has more space, but the beds in the sleeping car are more comfortable (at least I slept better that night).

The sleeping car compartment for 3 was really cramped. For a possible next time, I would probably opt for a sleeper compartment with a private bathroom, as there is some more space in the compartment in addition to the (very small) bathroom.

Look for the French vlogger Thibault at Simply Railway on Youtube, he rides Nightjet constantly and loves it.

And once you're there it will link you to all the other vloggers who ride on that train.
