NIGHT TRAINS: European Itinerary for 90 days, using lots of night trains.

Hey all!
We are on a RTW trip, heading now for Europe. Modest budget. Love Rick's guides. Trying to build an itinerary. May-July, UK in August.

Has anyone got a good itinerary for seeing much of Europe in 90 days?
Has anyone used Night Trains a lot in their tour of Europe?
Do you recommend a Eurail Pass? Is it better than an Interail Pass (I have US and UK passports)?
We'll take all your recommendations as I start to book transport, accommodations, and such.
We're well aware of Schengen requirements, and will be careful. http://adambard.github.io/schengencalc/
Thank so much in advance.

You might find that after a couple of night trains, the novelty wears off. I've done 2 on one trip, and that was enough. Sleep is less than ideal, with stops along the way in the middle of the night. But worth it if you are a sound sleeper. Try it a few times to see if it suits you.

Every time I have done a night train, got a lousy sleep with all the noise and vibration - despite the adventure of it. Then the next day you are beat, and need to crash in the hotel. So it's not necessary saving you a day.

It's also expensive even with a rail pass. For example, I did Zurich to Prague and it cost $160 for two with a rail pass, whereas we could have gotten a hotel in Prague for well under $100.

What I have enjoyed more is overnight ferries. The rooms are a little bigger than train cabins, and more to do walking around, and a smoother ride.

So if you’re in the middle of your RTW, are you in a warmer (as opposed to colder) place right now? Africa, Asia, or South America? It looks as if you might be saving the UK, potentially a cooler area right now, for when it’ll be warmer in Aug. If so, are you looking to tour warmer parts of Europe at the beginning? Greece to start, then working your way west and north? Or Spain/Portugal in May, then heading east/north.

Is Scandinavia on the agenda, at some point? At least you’ve got 90 days just for Europe, and not having to do Around the World in 80 Days!

I’ve taken just one night train or ferry on any trip. I agree that ferries are smoother and quieter. On either a boat or train, you can get a closed compartment, or sit out in the regular seating area, among fellow passengers. Depending on your price range, sense of safety, and travel style, one option might work better for you than the other.

My husband and I hated our one night on a sleeper train and have vowed never to take one again. We got zero sleep and arrived exhausted the next morning.
I love riding trains and enjoy looking out the windows at the scenery, the towns, the farms, the architecture, the stations. I would miss all of this if I only rode at night time in the dark.

Night trains are awful in my plentiful experience.

Go to the Man in Seat 61 website for rail pass advice.

Have you noticed that the OP posted twice, both times putting in a "schengen calculator" and never returned. I think this is Spam. Reported

We lived in Augsburg, Germany for four years (1987-1991) and did three night trains:
Munich to Paris
Rome to Munich
Munich to Copenhagen

The first two were 2nd class couchettes that had a compartment with six persons. There were four in our family and we shared with the other two. I remember that a friend had done a night train and advised me to sleep on my wallet with passport to be sure they weren't stolen. They weren't.
These trips worked out great, but on the third trip, it was just my wife and self and we did the first class and had our own compartment that we could lock. Also, had a sink with a slide out that you could do No 1 at night. That was even better, but of course expensive.

We’ve done overnight in a couchette where the seats pullout to a sleeper. Other people in the cabin. Awful. This was rijeka to Nuremberg in the early 1980’s. Fast forward to 2012. We took an overnight train in a private cabin with bunk type beds. It was Munich to Rijeka. It was fine, very quiet, only us. The room had a sink but the toilet was down at the end of the car.
We did this to get from city to city, not to save a hotel night. Flying would have put us in Zagreb which is an hour and a half away by car.
I will say that when the conductor saw how much we paid - bought our tickets before we left NY - he told us it would have been so much cheaper buying them in Germany. I believe we paid around $300 for one way, 2 people.

Badger....asking about night trains and putting in a Schengen calculator? The same link in both posts? Let's say I'm dubious?

If I'm wrong, I'll apologize.
