Hi All, Will be traveling with my parents and am looking for inexpensive but nice hotels with either a suite situation (2 bedrooms) or 2 separate rooms. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Inexpensive and close are adjectives that do not go together well. And, of course, by itself inexpensive means nothing. Please give your range. For rooms you are looking at 200E/each and up in the center of old Rome. Around Termini and some of the areas on the edge would get into the 130/150E range. Need more information.
I suppose you are right, Frank. I'm looking to spend between $90 USD to $100 USD/night. Anything comes to mind?
I've stayed at the Hotel Katty a couple of times. The most recent was about 18 months ago. The hotel is a 10 min walk from Termini train station in an old building. The hotel is on one or two floors of the building; there is an elevator. This hotel may be within your price range. My single room was en-suite (with bathroom). The Katty was remodelled and updated a few years ago. It is family-run; the daughter who is the main contact speaks fluent English. The neighborhood felt safe. There are restaurants, embassies, etc in that neighborhood.
Check out Ron in Rome website. Type hotels in the search box. Scroll down and you'll see posts for Hotels and B & B's in various Roma locales, i.e. by the Spanish Steps, by Termini, etc. His website is VERY informative and helpful.
You need a more realistic budget. One hundred US is about 75E. That is not inexpensive, it is cheap. Short of a hostel, something like the Beehive, maybe a dorm room, and it will be some distance from the center of old Rome. Even around Termini which is consider more reasonable you looking at a room for two people in excess of 100E and closer to 150E. A suite is out of the question at that level.
You should revaluate going to Rome with such a low budget. You should face reality about hotel costs - anywhere. We stayed at a great and central hotel - The River Palace in Rome, two years ago. We could walk to the Spanish Steps, the Victor Enmanuel Monument, the Fountain of Trevi and the Pantheon. We would totally recommend that hotel.
Which that budget, the only solution is to scoop some good deal in a suburban hotel (easier to find during summers or weekends) and "commute" daily by subway or light rail.
I wouldn't want to stay in a hotel that didn't include a/c. We were in Rome last September and it was schorching hot. Our hotel was lovely and close to so many things. I would think you might get bed bugs staying in a budget hotel. Think about it, why would a hotel charge less money when it had advantages of being clean, including a/c and close to sites?
I don't know when you're traveling, but that can make a difference in prices. In early September 2010 we stayed at Downtown Accomodation on Via Cavour, just down the street from the Coloseum. It was a clean and simple room with ensuite bath. We paid 70€ per night. I just looked at their current rates and the range is 65€-135€. They have AC but charge extra if you use it. If you decide to stay there I would recommend you ask for a room in the back. We were streetside and it was noisy.
I stayed in a cute little B&B last May for 90 euros a night. It's right near the Pantheon, basically a perfect location to me. That was one room, one double bed; this B&B only had 3 rooms and while it was perfect for my needs, it was not a "hotel" in the amenities sense. It was so much cheaper than any other place I"d found with good reviews that I was actually a little concerned it was so "cheap!" But it turned out great. I don't think you will find what you are looking for at that budget, in fact I don't know if you'd find that in any sizable city I've ever been in the US or Europe. Even small towns in italy you will pay that much for centrally-located accommodations in an actual hotel. In Rome, forget it.
Julianna, You might look into the Villa San Pio which is in the Aventine section of Rome. While it's not in the heart of the city, it's just a short walk to the subway and is a leafy, quiet area. The hotel itself is lovely and they serve a marvelous breakfast.
Check out the Lancelot Hotel. We stayed there for several days 6 years ago and I'm still raving about how great it was. :) Family-owned, nice people, great food, comfy bed, AND, it was only about a 5-min. walk from the Colloseum (I keep forgetting how to spell that).
I would like to second the Hotel Lancelot. I have stayed there on three occaisions and have been very satisfied. You will not, however, stay there for $100 per night. The Lancelot will most likely be $150 per night per room.
