Newark- Terminal B to Terminal C on United

My husband's flight from Paris connects in Newark before his flight SFO (both are United). When he arrives at terminal B and goes through immigration, will he have to go through security at Terminal C? Sounds like there is an air train between terminals, but outside of security? Is there a United bus between terminals inside of security?

Thanks for your help.

When returning from an international flight, everyone has to go through security again to get to the connecting flights. This is due to having to collect checked bags for customs clearance. Since checked bags can contain things not allowed for carry on, the security check is to insure no one grabbed anything from their checked bags.

Every United international flight I have flown into Newark has always arrived in terminal C (I do see some scheduled that go to B) so once clearing immigration and customs, the connections security check dumped me right back into the secure area of C where it was simple to walk to my gate for the connection. United does offer a bus that runs inside security from B to C.

As Mark noted, everyone making an international to domestic connection has to re-clear security. I did the United B to C transfer last September. After clearing immigration, customs, and rechecking our baggage, we took the AirTrain--which is landside (outside of security)--to Terminal C. The bus is airside, so to use that you'd have to reclear security in Terminal B before taking it to C. Since the AirTrain runs more often than the bus, and since you have to re-clear security either way, the AirTrain is considered the way to go.

If you have lots of time on your hands, you can read this FlyerTalk thread that deals with all things related to transferring on United flights at Newark. There's a lot to go through, but I found no other site that had this level of advice and information.

Newark has two immigration halls in terminals B & C. On slower days they sometimes shut down the immigration hall in C (which is United's Hub), and force all international flights to debored at B. There is no way to know in advance which immigration hall will be used:( You'll have to use the monorail to transfer between the terminals after immigration/customs. I know there is an airside bus which connects terminals A and C, but I don't believe there is s similar bus between B and C.

Since I only have a carryon, I can't grab anything from my checked bags. They could cut down on security waits by allowing those of us without checked luggage to stay within the secure area and go through our own customs with just our carryons.

Lee,

Yes, I agree with you completely. Don't let anyone into the baggage claim area unless they have a checked bag receipt and then keep the carry on only group separated from the checked bag group the rest of the way through. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening due to the extra space and extra employees required for the redundant areas.

Yes, Lee, great idea. I also wonder why, when passengers enter the US, they have to retrieve checked bags and re-check them if they're continuing to another destination. Why aren't the bags checked all the way through to your final destination, the way they are when you fly from the US to Europe? That system would certainly cut down on the necessary number of security staff.
