New Years Eve in Central Europe-what would you do?

My travelling companions leave me in Munich on Dec 31, and I'll be travelling solo for a few days. So I can either stay in Munich that night (which would be my 5th), or go to somewhere within ~6 hour train-ride. Or even spend New Years Eve on an overnight train to somewhere exotic. Any places with interesting NYE festivities? I'm a Male, early 40s. Prefer cultural/artistic over the party scene, but not too old to enjoy the occasional bit of debauchery ;)

Largely what James said. I will only add that Vienna is about 5 hours train from Munich so it meets your parameters. The whole 1st district becomes one huge party with stages, punch stands, etc... and, yes, drunks playing with fireworks. It'll be freezing and crowded, but some people obviously enjoy that sort of thing. As was said, most grown-ups reserve a table well in advance at a restaurant where there's music. Or they celebrate with their families/friends at home.

I suggest Salzburg and get on the reservations for anywhere pronto, there's little to nothing out there.
