New TSA Electronics Screening Rules

From now on, all electronics larger than a cellphone must be taken out of your bag for screening--laptops, tablets, ereaders, game consoles, etc.

New TSA Electronics Screening Rules

This will happen over the next few months as TSA screeners are retrained.

There will be no change to Precheck lines. The new rules are only for the regular security lines.

I thought this was already the case??? Maybe I've just been in airports with overzealous screeners, and the rules are now catching up to them . . .

Some airports in the U.S were testing this out. You may have gone through them.

I'm heading to London and Paris next month, I think I'll just take my iphone 6s and leave my mini-ipad at home, at least till I see how this all shakes out. I'm pre-checked and have Global reentry so going over wouldn't be the problem but coming back through CDG may slow us down going through security. I love reading books on my iPad so I'm going to miss it.

In my 15 years of flying I've always had to take electronics out of bags for screening... In or out of the USA.

This new rule also includes what I would describe as "professional" camera equipment, i.e. a camera with changeable lenses. As I understand it, my Nikon D700 body will now have to be placed in a separate bin but I believe a small camera such as a Canon G7X could still be left in a carry-on bag. What was a little frustrating was I could not find a specific list on either the TSA or Dept. of Homeland Security websites describing what constitutes an "electronic device" subject to the new screening rules. Is a flash, grip, separate charger, etc. included? I have always used a carry-on backpack containing all my camera equipment since there is no way I would pack this in my checked baggage & just sent it through like any other carry-on. Anyone have any current information on this?

Donald, you may be overreacting to this. When you go through security at CDG just put your mini ipad in the bin next to your 3-1-1 bag. I go through lots of airport security with a mini tablet and this adds about five seconds.

It will slow down everyone ahead of you, who aren't prepared.

Donald,

There's no reason not to take your iPad, as it will only add a short time to security to have it inspected. Be sure to have it charged, as they may ask you to switch it on. The new rules really aren't that much of a big deal.

Does anything stop this madness of security masquerade? Let's solve a problem that isn't there.

We flew home from Zurich and were required to take all electronics out of our bags - including noise-cancelling headphones, which seemed bizarre. I've decided that the rules are whatever the person working that day wants them to be. It really doesn't add much, if any, time, if you're paying attention. They're usually standing at the head of the line repeating what has to go in a bin over and over and over and over ....
