If one has a private room in a hostel, is it safe to leave bags in the room during the day or should we check them in at the desk while we are out and about? Thanks.

Julianne, Your bags should be perfectly safe, especially in a private room. Only the staff will have access to the room. However, I agree with Ed that it would be a good idea to lock them as that tends to prevent "opportunistic theft". Which Hostel will you be staying at? I assume your private room will have an ensuite? Happy travels!

If it is a private room the only one who might steal it is the hotel staff...if you don't trust them not to steal it from your room it won't be any safer at the front desk. Odds are they would never steal your whole bag, but I would use luggage locks to avoid any snooping.

Julianne, also don't leave valuables in the backpack when you go out for the day, though your bag will more than likely be safe, don't leave things to chance.
