Maybe I missed it, but I didnt see this mentioned anywhere on the RS site. I see a new series called Rick Steves' Art of Europe is starting on my local PBS station. I'm assuming its available in other areas with PBS stations. I know that the value of art has been a topic of interest in the forum several times, and so thought I'd mention it. Quoting the blurb, "Rick does for art what he does fro travel - makes it fun and accessible".
I believe he’s providing a “sneak peek” at the coming Monday Night Travel on 10/3. Very much looking forward to it and the series.
I saw a preview on YouTube last night and he said "set your calendars" but didn't mention a date.
roubrat, I see it on my PBS schedule for this Saturday (October 01) Maybe it started earlier? I realize that local PBS affiliate stations all set their own programming schedules so it may not be the same everywhere.
I'm thinking Allan of Calgary deserves credit for this, because his spirited threads on the subject may have inspired the series. 😉
Stan, thanks for the ‘heads up’! I’ll be tuning in tomorrow.
Did a search in my sat TV system, and found it. For those who receive PBS on Rick's home-town station KCTS in Seattle, looks like the first episode is airing on Monday 10/3 @ 10 pm:
Season 1, Episode 1: "Stone Age to Ancient Greece."
As the saying goes, "Check your local listings."
Aaaand, here's the official blurb: Art of Europe
https://www.ricksteves.com/tv-programmers/art-of-europe
Six episodes listed, with a link to the YouTube teaser.
This appears to be promotional materials targeted for TV stations and other media outlets. Dated for release tomorrow (shhhhh...).
Thanks, Stan, for the heads-up.
For those who watch Detroit's PBS the first episode will air Tuesday 10-4 at 5 pm and will repeat on Saturday 10-8 at 11:30 am.
The second episode "Lights, Camera, Murder!" airs on Tuesday 10-11 at 5 pm with a repeat the following Saturday at 11:30 am.
Is it pledge drive time for the PBS stations? I know they have to do these in order to raise funds for their programming, but the shows on during these drives are brutal to watch live, even with Rick as the special guest ... set the dvr/tivo/vcr/betamax/whatever and wear out the fast forward button.
It’s interesting; this series is not being aired on main PBS stations in NYC — just a tertiary station called All Arts.
The DVR is set.
Those Fast-Forward and Skip-Ahead buttons are some of humanity's greatest inventions.
Thank you for posting this. I never would have found these programs otherwise. The TIVO found the programs and is set to record them.
I've enjoyed MNT since its inception and am going to tune in to the originator's take on his 'RS AoE' as he Zooms about it from the environs of his Edmonds kitchen/dining area (note, the later MNT session can seem peppier and looser in delivery and style, as the spirits imbibed continues and the time passes ;-) on Monday. It will prime the pump nicely for viewing the 1st episode of the programming a few hours later on KCTS. Shout out to quality public television and a thanks to RSE for providing excellent content!

Do you think 'Dogs Playing Poker' will make the cut?
In Oregon the first episode is tomorrow Sat Oct 1 at 7:30. Looking forward to it. I love his book Europe 101: History and Art for the Traveler. It's on my bookshelf and I refer to it now and again.
EDITED to add: From today's post on Rick Steves' facebook page and I quote: "I don't know about a cigarette after great sex, but…
I've often felt like a cigarette after great art, and I don’t even smoke. Climbing the dark spiral staircase in Paris' Sainte-Chapelle and suddenly emerging in the most beautifully lit medieval chapel in Europe...a virtual lantern of 800-year-old stained glass built to house the crown of thorns. Turning our lights up in a monastery dining hall and seeing Leonardo's Last Supper come colorfully to life for our camera — and then realizing what a blessing it was for the friars, who for centuries ate in silence under that fresco, to dine in such divine company. Looking into the eyes of Michelangelo’s David and seeing more than a shepherd boy sizing up a giant…seeing humankind stepping out of the Middle Ages and into our modern world. El Greco's faces flickering like candles, Botticelli's Cupid shooting his arrow blindfolded, and sultry Art Nouveau that makes me mutter "m-m-m-much more Mucha." Seeing and appreciating great art leaves me extremely satisfied.
“Rick Steves Art of Europe” — my brand-new, six-hour miniseries covering European art from the Parthenon to Picasso — is debuting soon on public television across the country...taking the pleasure of sharing my favorite artistic encounters to new heights.
Check your local listings — and don’t be shy as, together, we can love art with abandon."
Hopefully Rick will eventually post it on this website.
Do you think 'Dogs Playing Poker' will make the cut?
I hope so, Allan. Since I have a signed original, on velvet.
I watched the first episode last night. Looking forward to the balance.
It's actually on the website, you can watch all 6 episodes.
I've just viewed 1st episode and enjoyed it immensely and can recommend. Next episode was available Oct 10 for me.
You can get it from PBS Passport. Only the first episode is available now which we enjoyed very much last night. You can't get shows from PBS Passport until they have aired on PBS. I like it because I can watch any time.
As Heather above said, its available on this website, all episodes. I'm going to start watching this afternoon.
I can't seem to find it on the website. Can someone direct me to the episodes?
Nancy, it does take some detective work. click on the episode links, not the trailer at top of page
Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but I think binge watching TV series is cheating.
It's also on the homepage.
Ah heck, I do like a binge watch but only the first episode is available! The rest are just trailers. Oh well, something to look forward to.
1 RS always does these things up well, but I wish he would rename the series "Art of Western Europe" and then do a second series for the "Art of Eastern Europe".
2 They really are distinctly different; especially the religious art; London is to Sofia as NYC is to the moon.
3 But I get it that this is part of his tour marketing package and that's great as what ever it is it lends to understanding of the world.
I watched the first show this morning and it was excellent. Well worth the time to find it on PBS.
As for covering both Eastern and Western Europe, he covers both in a linear history starting with the cave paintings in France.
I'm looking forward to watching these but I really wish he'd do some new updated travel episodes.
but I really wish he'd do some new updated travel episodes.
I believe there's a new season of travel shows starting this month. This page of the website shows the lineup of the new shows: https://www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/video/tv-show/season-11.
