Netbook and downloading pictures

Hi,
I want to take my netbook to Germany and use it to download pictures and send them via email to friends and family along the way. I am not to computer literate so I would appreciate some help on how to do this and how to store them. I am already looking into getting an external hard drive. (is this wise to do?) I have also heard of web sites you can download to ect... Would like some advise on that to. Thanks for the help.

I do this all the time. I've taken a laptop, notebook computer, or netbook with me on every trip (8) since 2000.

I assume you are already familiar with connecting to the Internet with Wifi and with sending emails, themselves.

First, many netbooks have a card slot built in. If that card is what you use in your camera (many cameras use SD, and most netbooks accept SD), just put the card in the slot. If it accepts a different card type, you will need a USB card reader. The netbook will recognize the card as a drive. Open the drive and you will see all of the pictures. Create a folder on your main hard drive and drag the pictures into the folder.

When you go to send email, the email software give you the option to "attach". Click that and it opens a dialog box. Navigate to the folder with your pictures and select the one you want. Click "open" (or "insert") and it will attach that picture to your email.

Hint: If you are using Windows, in the window with the pictures, click on the "views" icon and select "thumbnails". This will allow you to see thumbnails of all of the pictures, so you can see what you are attaching.

If your netbook doesn't have a card slot (or doesn't have one that fits the type of memory your camera uses), you can upload the pictures from your camera with the USB cord that came with it. With my camera, once I plug it in, it asks if I want to upload (and I use Picasa for managing the pictures after that). Then you can copy them from Picasa to your desktop if you want, for ease of locating them to attach to emails or uploading to travel blogs and such.

For those of you who are thinking of doing this and do not yet have a Netbook, I'd advise you to note the card reading ability when you get yours.

My Acer Aspire has a "Multi-in-one" card reader that takes SD, MMC, XD, and several type of Memory Stick. My wife's ASUS only accepts SD.

I also have a Lexar Jump Drive Trio, kind of like a flash drive (in fact you can use it as one), that plugs into a USB port and accepts SD, XD, and Memory Sticks.
