Need suggestions on where to go after Barcelona and before Holland.

We are going to be taking a TransAtlantic cruise in May which drops us off in Barcelona. We plan to stay there a couple of days, and we will be ending our time in Europe in southern Holland visiting relatives. I'd like to squeeze another stop in between those two countries. I was thinking of possibly Provence where I've never been, but I do love Italy dearly and also have always wanted to go to Sicily. I'm not sure which would make sense as far as ease of travel (train or plane?) and would be the most cost effective for just a few days. Perhaps another destination in that vicinity would make more sense. Does anyone have any suggestions?

For just a few days, I would fly to Paris, but that's me. Check out cheap flights from Barcelona and see what's available. If you haven't been to Barcelona before, you might just spend the time there. There's plenty to see and do for a few days.

We took such a cruise two years ago. We spent a few days in Barcelona then flew Vueling from BCN to Marseilles, boarded a train at the airport and went to Arles where we spent about a week. We day tripped by train from Arles to Avignon and also Isle sur la Sorgue, rented a car and drove the Luberon , St Remy, Aix, et al. from our base in Arles before driving on to Burgundy. Provence was great, the weather in early May was fine, and the travel connections from Barcelona hotel door to Arles could not have been easier. The Vueling flight was well priced and we encountered no problems. Though I had wanted to see Provence for as long as I can remember, it was Burgundy that really grabbed me. Beautiful, green countryside, historic and gorgeous towns, and a wealth of medieval history. Travel with the car was fantastic.. Easy driving. Certainly there are no flies on Provence, but you might consider Burgundy too. Safe travels!

Well you asked so I will tell you,, it would so be Paris. Easy and fast by air. The only caveat is since you are cruising you will possibly have more luggage then a normal tourist.. be careful, inter europeon airlines have stricter weight restrictions and will charge high fees for overweights.. and if you elect to take the trains to avoid that.. you must be able to easily handle carrying and loading your own luggage , there is no help.
