Hi everyone! My friend and I are 18 and we are planning a little trip to Europe to visit her Aunt and mom. But we did want to make a quick stop in Paris between London (where her mom is) and Germany(where her Aunt is. But my parents are extremely nervous with us being two younger girls alone in a European city. I was wondering if anyone knew any cheap, safe, clean, and well located hotels that we could stay at. I have been recommended the Hotel de Champs du Mars as a good place to stay. But please let me know what a good idea would be for France that would give my parents some peace of mind! Thanks for all your help!!!!
I don't know if this can tell if it is a safe area or not, but someone earlier posted to try google maps and go street view. I am staying in the Rue Cler area at Hotel Relais Bosquet and spent a long time going through area and trying to find the Eiffel Tower etc... :) Happy Travels.
Celia, I believe it would be accurate to say that all of the Hotels listed in Rick's Guidebooks are "safe".
The Hotel de Champs du Mars is a good choice and another in the same area you could consider is the Grand Hotel Leveque. Both are in the Rue Cler area, close to Metro stops (Ecole Militaire), lots of restaurants and ATM's, etc.
If you need any further information, post another note and I'm sure the group here will be able to help.
Happy travels!
Celia, you can tell your parents truthfully that you will be safer there than in most American cities.
Wer stayed at the Londres Eiffel and found it safe and clean. It may be a bit more than the CHamps de Mar. We walked around after 11pm and every corner you turned there was an outdoor cafe with people enjoying a meal or a drink. Never saw a problem. As someone else said, you will be safer in Pari than almost any North American City.
Not usre why the Eiffel Tower was hard to find from Rue Cler. You can just aout see it from there!
First off thank you everyone who has helped so far! But unfortunately the Hotel du Champs de Mars is completely booked for those days we would be there. Do any of you have another good recommendation that is similar to the Hotel du Champs de Mars! Thanks!
Tell parents Paris is considered a very safe city,, especailly when you compare it to similar sized American cities, now some of them are truly scary!!
I am not young, but I am female and have stayed in Paris solo, and feel safe doing so.. there are hundreds of good hotels,, what is your budget?
Celia,
Did you try the Grand Hotel Leveque? It's not luxurious but is a very comfortable and well run Hotel. Their website will tell you which dates they have vacancies in various room categories.
Cheers!
Bit more expensive but the same area; try Hotel Muguet.
Madame Pelletier who owns/runs the place has a great spot, in a residential area, just 5 minutes from the other hotels you're looking at. For one night maybe spend a few extra bucks for a safe, clean, totally and tastefully renovated hotel.
Landladies in the adjacent apartment buildings on the street patrol their 'areas' all day to make sure the street sweepers & garbagemen do their job properly and that no 'unsavoury folks' are in 'their space'; quite funny to watch, actually.
Iain, I was using the google map street level. Some of the streets where not part of this program so I kept hitting streets that I wanted to turn down but the program would'nt let me. I was using the map in front of RS Paris book, I know that it is literally just around the corner and just down the street. I was just having fun trying to navigate the program. :)
Yeah, Kirsten, Google has its limitations!
I've stayed at Hotel Beaugency and Hotel Levesque...Beaugency had free internet and we had to pay at Levesque but other than that they were very similar. Rooms were small but we expected that. We felt safe at all times.
I have stayed twice at Hotel Familia, which is right in the Latin Quarter. It's a bit of a walk to a Metro stop, but right near the Sorbonne and is a very residential area. I highly recommend it - the first time I stayed there, I was 20 and on my own and never once felt unsafe.
Celia,
I am doing this with a bit of a sigh, since this is my little Paris secret, but I have a feeling this just might be the right place for you.
Once you check out the site, you'll see why: it's laughably cheap, clean, fun, SAFE and you can't beat the location. It's right behind the Sorbonne university on one side, behind Notre Dame on the other, the area is full of life: shops, bistros, ethnic restaurants (try the Baghdad Cafe up the hill!), bookstores and markets. The metro is around the corner down the street.
The rooms are very simple, but very clean, and very, very safe!!
Hmmmm, thanks Corinna. Must make a note of this and pass it on to all my traveling friends :-)
The Trinite Plaza is a fine little hotel also, very convienent to Montmartre, but perhaps a bit close to Pigalle for young girls to be out after dark.
;-)) Ash,
Hotel de Commerce doesn't have elevators, and the WC is in the hall.
I thought it was time to pass on the secret to the next generation. It TRULY is a marvelous place,
but I figured that the older crowd won't bite, so I'll still be able to rent a room there when I go to Paris ;-)))
I always end up with the room on the fourth floor, no matter what I do! If you do too: take everything with you that you need for the day!!!
And: it's much, much better and safer to crawl up the stone steps of the spiral staircase to the 4th floor, than trying to walk up! ;-)))
Have fun!!! It's a great place!
:-))
Corinna, it wouldn't be the first time I've crawled back up the stairs to my room, but being older and (hopefully) wiser I don't plan on doing it again anytime soon. And, BTW, is that the American 4th floor or the European one? Might make all the difference...
Try Hotel Kensington in general rue cler area, safe, cheap, clean and well located.
18 is young for any travel USA or European. If you go promise to limit your evening hours out. Call and email frequently. have a definite itinerary for your parents to follow. Hotel Champs du Mars is great book quickly as they fill up. If you can't go this time there will be other times, you will be older and can stay longer in London and Paris. Alot to look forward to.
