Need help planning a trip to Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France

We are flying into Berlin and are flying out of Paris 17 days later. We are two adults and two teenagers (17 and 20). There is interest in seeing Berlin, Amsterdam, Belgium, Luxembourg City and Paris. Looking for any and all suggestions for a great itinerary. Would like to travel by train. Will be in Europe for Christmas and New Years.

Thanks for all your help!

Being mid winter, keep it simple, and minimize your number of travel days with luggage.
Having been there I don't see much attraction with Luxembourg City (by comparison).

Berlin - 4 nights (with a day for Potsdam)
Amsterdam - 4 nights (with a day for The Hague)
Gent - 4 nights (with days for Antwerp, Bruges, Brussels)
Paris - 5 nights (with a day for Versailles)

The only adjustment possibly needed to David's excellent plan would depend on where that puts you on Dec. 24-25 and on New Year's eve/day. There may be either closures or special celebrations that you'd want to adjust for, or limited train service.

You might wish to research Christmas museum closures and Christmas Markets, if those are of interest to you. I agree that Luxembourg can be left out of a first trip to Europe. Cologne is more on the way from Berlin to Gent. Paris is well connected to Brussels or Antwerp.

Those Belgian cities are so close that it doesn't matter which one you sleep in. Brussels is not everyone's favorite. Many old discussions in the Search box, here.

Note rail discounts around 3 months out, but those tickets aren't usually changeable.
