Need help deciding between Sardinia or the Cyclades

Hello! We are planning an island getaway in Europe for early September and cannot decide between Sardinia or the Cyclades, specifically Naxos and/or Paros. They sound equally amazing. We have been to Italy (Rome, Tuscany, Venice) and love it, but this would be our first time in Greece.

Here are details about us and what we are looking for. Given the time of year and our wish list, which would you recommend?

  • Active couple in our late 40s
  • We would be flying in and out of ATL using Delta miles. Delta flies direct to Rome but not Athens, so for the latter we would have to connect through Paris or another European city.
  • We'd like to spend about 10 days on the ground. If we choose Sardinia we'll spend 4 nights in Rome (one of our favorite cities) and 6 on the island; if we choose Greece we'll only spend a night or two in Athens and the rest of the time in the Cyclades.
  • We are comfortable renting a car if necessary.
  • We don't need luxury accommodations (we are definitely not the Costa Smeralda crowd) but would prefer smaller boutique or family-owned properties - budget is about $200 to $250 USD per night.
  • Would like: Warm and clear turquoise water, beautiful white sand beaches, low crowds, little or no cruise ship traffic, laid-back pace, sailing, hiking, marine life, beautiful views, dramatic scenery, pretty towns, good food and wine (we are fairly adventurous eaters)
  • Do not want: nightlife or a party atmosphere, big crowds, overdevelopment, lots of cruise ships, dry/scrubby landscapes

I hope this is enough to go on! Thanks for helping us pick.

Well I was plugging for Naxos and Paros right till the end when you fantasied that landscape in early September would be lush and green . It won’t .

Have no idea about Sardinia- are they lush ? It’s the end of long hot summers in both places .

Doesn’t need to be lush exactly, just preferably not dull and brown.

I meant to ask you, pat - What made you lean toward Greece over Sardinia, landscape notwithstanding?

You might search the forum (Googling ricksteves.com forum Sardinia might work better than this site's Search function) to find the relatively few other posts about Sardinia. I have never planned a trip there, so my memory may be faulty, but I think someone who has been to Sardinia commented that the island is very beach-oriented, which might mean it has fewer historic sights than Greece. I am not sure about this.

I haven’t been to the Greek islands but one of my best vacations (in late September) was to Sardinia. Beaches, hiking, history, scenery to die for, friendly people and lots of locally brewed Ichnusa beer! In the two weeks I had, I also took the ferry to Corsica for 4 days. One of the top three vacations to Europe of over 20. The only dry, scrubby landscape I encountered was when I drove the coast roads around Cap Corse. But the scenery there was still outstanding. Rent a car, explore, visit the wineries, be careful of the shepherds, pigs, goats and cows resting in the roadways. Stop and smell the myrtle!

My colleague reported "beautiful white sand beaches" in Sardinia, especially around her first-stop town of Villasimius, where she and her husband loved the boutique Hotel Su Sergenti during their stay last October. Even where Greece has some nice, secluded beaches, I've never seen them looking like the Caribbean.

Thanks. The photos of some of the Sardinian beaches I have seen really do look like the Caribbean (which I have been to many times)!

The Telegraph article is a great read. Thanks. I think we are leaning toward Sardinia but if anyone wants to talk up Naxos/Paros, I’m all ears.
