Neck wallets - Rick Steves or Eagle Creek? Which do you prefer?

We have happily used the Rick Steves neck wallets over the years.....so much so, as I packed for my last trip, I noticed two of them were becoming thread-bare (due to overuse....not quality....our neck wallets are well traveled!!)

But, since I am ready to order some new ones, I'm pausing to alternatively consider the Eagle Creek Undercover Neck Wallet...the kind with the zippers at the top and the open pouch in the back.

If any of you have used BOTH the RS type and the Eagle Creek type, I'd value your comparisons/preference (and why). Or, is there another brand you prefer?

Does one hold up better than the other? Is the Eagle Creek one as soft and flat as the RS one?

Thank you!!

And, if any Rick Steves' staff members are reading this, please feel free to post if there will be any upcoming sales, free shipping, etc.

You know, places like Kohl's, REI, actually carry these in the store where you can look and touch and try before you buy.

Sales or free shipping from ricksteves.com?

Of course, I wouldn't be able to officially divulge any upcoming major Holiday Sale in which nearly everything would be at least 20% off with free shipping in the US. I also wouldn't be able to divulge that the sale begins on Thursday Nov 12.

*wink wink

Tim, thanks....sounds like I'll have to actually go in a store. Oddly, I just hardly ever go shopping (for other than groceries and gardening things). But, good idea for the touch and see aspect.

Webmaster, thanks for the heads-up. I'll mark my calendar :)

Margaret,

I don't think it makes much difference. I've used both RS and EC waist wallets for many years, and both work equally well.

I didn't like the size of the ones available commercially (all too big) so we actually have some we've sewn ourselves. They are made of muslin and sized to just fit a passport plus cash and cards. They have only one compartment that closes with a flap and button (like a shirt pocket, no zipper). Cord is a cotton shoe string. Total cost was $0 as all the materials were lying around the house. I've used them for 15 years with no problems. I'm certain I'm not the only one who's done this.

I can only address the Eagle Creek ( based on Michael's comment , this could include the Rick product ) - There are two models of the neck wallet - One has two full depth pockets , the other has a third , shallow compartment in between the other two . That is preferable for cash and credit cards - you won't have to dig to get to them when you need them .

Thanks all :)

I'm likely going to order another RS one/two while they are on sale, but will also check out the other brands when I get a chance to do some in-person looking.

On-line, I see where a few have zippers on the side, in addition to the top zipper, and some zippers look heavier (not sure I'd like that). I understand the logic of it (can access easier thru unbuttoning one shirt button and pull cards out sideways), but still mulling over whether I'd like that.

I'll get out to do some touch-and-feel comparisons. Again, thank you for your experience/perspective.

I got mine at an REI store and have no complaints. Used it for 10 trips in Europe (21 weeks) and a few trips in this country. The main thing is that you use it.
