Neck Wallets

On my next trip, I want to try a neck wallet to carry some cash & credit cards rather than a wallet...with my main moneybelt inside my pants.

There are lots to choose from: Eagle Creek, Lewis & Clark, RS...

Who here has used a neck wallet? Did you like them? Which one did you use? How comfortable was it? Pros & Cons?

I got the Eagle Creek. Haven't used it yet, but I liked it better than the RS one (it felt sturdier and like it carried more), and it was cheaper.

For a man they might be OK, but I have never found one that was comfortable for me and was not visible under my clothes. I'll stick with the regular moneybelt, with a regular wallet for daily money.

I have the Eagle Creek Neck Wallet and I like it! I use it all the time when I travel. Much easier to get to things when I do need that extra cash. I still wear a money belt to keep my passport in and credit cards I'm not using at the time. But to keep some cash, and one credit card, I like to put in the neck wallet. One down side about the neck wallet is if you travel in the summer, it will show through your clothes. I travel during colder months, so wearing sweaters and jackets, it doesn't show at all.

I have the Eagle Creek one. I use it occasionally. I still seem to prefer the money belt.

You als adjust the neck wallet to sort of a messenger bag style cross body if you don't like hanging in front. You put it around your neck but also put one arm through the strap. the pouch can then be situated on your side kind of under your arm pit. sometimes that feels more secure to me.

To all of you who have posted that you have the "Eagle Creek" on....there are three different Eagle Creek models. Which ones do you have?

If you don't remember which model, here are links to all three....hopefully the picture will help:

I use the Eagle Creek Neck Pouch (first on your list) and the also Eagle Creek pouch that attaches to a belt loop. I like to divide my stuff (cash, credit cards) so that if something happens to one I have a back-up. I especially like the neck pouch for storing my passport and boarding pass as I go through the airport. I also wear it sometimes during the day--it's a little bulky but not a problem for me.

Sharon, I also use the Eagle Creek Hidden Pocket (attaches to your belt) as my main moneybelt. Very comfortable and not too difficult to access if needed, but I prefer not to have to use it during the day. I want the neck pouch for daily cash, one CC and my passport, if needed.

Hi Frank,
I think the neck pouch is a great alternative for walking around during the day for credit cards, passport, etc. I also have a small Eagle Creek bi-fold wallet that I wear on my belt for small bills and coins that are easy to get so I don't have to pull out my neck pouch for a small purchase.

I just got one by Samsonite.First time when I use a neck wallet.
It's a standard one, just one pocket.I haven't used it yet, but I noticed that the back of it it's made of a very soft fabric, sort of fleece, so this wouldn't rub against your skin. The cord seems to be soft enough as well.
If I am able to connect to the internet , I will let you know if it's comfortable. I'm leaving this Friday.

I wore a moneybelt on numerous trips but my last trip I also took a neck wallet(steves).I use the neckwallet when I might need my passport, creditcard,DL on that day in addition to a little extra cash.I found it to be comfortable and easily accessable.

I have used the Eagle Creek silk neck wallet on several occasions. I put in under my jacket and have also placed the strap across my torso to wear the wallet under my arm for extra security - each way worked well. The other Eagle Creek neck wallet gets wrinkled easily and doesn't lay as flat. The neck strap is adjustable. It's fairly easy to hide, but is more noticeable than a money belt.

Beware of RS neck wallet stitching. On my way through the airport terminal for the start of a recent trip, one strap end came off the neck wallet suddenly without provocation. Had this not happened I wouldn't have known how tenuous the connection was and been the victim of someone grabbing the wallet, I would have lost it quite easily. I looked at several neck wallets beforehand and had even read a review about the faulty construction, but considered it a one-off issue.
Along with strengthening the stitching, I suggest redesign to make the zipper long enough to slip a passport in side-in instead of short-edge in, for an added way to stash the passport.

Sally, have you told the folks at RS/ETBD of the problem?

Frank II, I've never used a Neck Wallet and doubt that I ever will, as I just don't feel comfortable with something hanging around my neck. I primarily use an Eagle Creek waist-type Money Belt (an older version of their two compartment "Undercover Money Belt DLX") and have found that works well. On my latest trip, I also packed along one of the RS belt-loop "Hidden Pockets", but didn't have an occasion to try it. For "daily operating cash", I've been trying one of These Wallets on the last few trips, and it's worked well so far. Cheers!

A neck pouch is all I ever use when traveling. It is so easy to keep your tickets, passport and money in, especially when going through passport control, check-in, etc. Have no idea what brand it is, as I think I bought it at Woolworths about 20 some years ago. I use a messenger bag too, for daily stuff. Tend not to use credit cards a whole lot and I don't carry my passport with me on a daily basis when in other countries, only time I need it is when traveling from one place to another.

Pssst....Ken.... Frank posted his question over THREE YEARS ago. Someone else dug it up without looking at the date.

Thank you, Nancy, for realizing I asked this question over three years ago. And , Ken, that Pacsafe Wallet you noted, is the one I use in my every day existence. At least the older model.

Nancy, I hadn't answered the question yet, so I figured "better late than never". Cheers!

In the last several years I have gone thru two neck wallets; an REI and a ?. I didn't like any of them...actually I did not like the concept...or it did not like me. (quite "itchy" , yikes!)I originally wore them in front, but may have been happier if I had worn them on the side. I have since gone to an Eagle Creek Undercover Hidden Pocket. I love it! I wear it under my pants, right under my right pocket. I can't even tell that it is there.

I go back and forth. I'll go with a regular money belt for awhile, then try a neck wallet or even a leg wallet. Things I like about a neck wallet: You don't have to mess with your pants to get at them. They don't get as sweaty as a regular money belt. Things I don't like: They're pretty obvious in short sleeve weather.
I don't like a lot around my neck. The wallet plus a camera tend to bug me. I like to wear them under one arm (under my shirt). To get them the right length I put a knot in the cord close to the wallet (so I don't have a knot sticking out of my collar). I still go somewhere private to get into them and otherwise use them exactly the same as a moneybelt.

I use both but prefer just the neck wallet when driving. I find it more comfortable when sitting & getting in and out of a car. I find that the biggest problem is in hot weather, the neck wallet does not conceal well when wearing a light weight shirt. Then I prefer the completely hidden money belt. I find that wearing either style just takes a bit of time to getting used to.

Once again, Frank asked his question OVER THREE YEARS AGO.

A posting on the Traveler's Helpline is like the Energizer Rabbit....it keeps going....and going...and going. It also proves that a lot of people only read the original question, ignore the date, and ignore what others have written.

I don't use a money belt and basically don't like using it. But the neck wallet is different. I bought the one put out by Eagle Creek and would use it constantly if I were going to Prague or Italy.

If another person reactivated a thread from 2008, then the topic is obviously still of interest to someone. Many people read the responses, not just the OP.......There seem to be two groups of responders on this board: those who feel they are only answering a question for the benefit of the OP and those who feel like they are also providing information for other interested parties......If there's a problem with responses to older questions, then the webmaster could probably close older threads as they do on tripadvisor.

Good one Cynthia, nice to see a positive posting. People have shown an interest in the question regardless of the date. Some of the others are always just looking to correct people. Once a teacher........

Since I asked the question three years ago, I might as well update on what I experienced. I tried a neck wallet and didn't like it. I occasionally use a RFID blocking Passport Pouch around my neck but I've gone back to my faithful hidden pocket--the same thing I've used for over 20 years.
