Naming your trip

Do you like to name your trips?

I write about my trips, so I like to have a simple name to refer to them. Sometimes it's easy, as when it's one country or one region. (My last trip was "Down Under" -- it included Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand.)

But if I'm traveling to several places, it can be awkward to refer to them by all the places I'm going.

A few years back I went to Belgium, the Netherlands, and Norway. I called this trip "Beltherway." (This was suggested by a friend.)

In July/August I'm doing "African Safari." This also includes some non-safari activities, but since the main thrust of the trip is the safari, I'm okay with that.

In October/November I have a trip to Rome, Greece, Albania, and North Macedonia. What do you think of RoGrANoMa? I kind of hate it. Rome + Balkans? Any other ideas?

Next year I'm going to Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, with a tiny bit of France thrown in. I'm thinking "Morocco + Iberia" and ignore the French part of the trip for the purposes of naming it.

Maybe it's silly, but I'd love to hear your ideas.

United Airlines lets me name my trips, as do a couple of apps, and I have exactly this problem - naming them within whatever character limitation.

I'm totally stealing your idea for your RoGrANoMa trip, except that mine will just be GrANoMa (no Rome) which I think I will shorten to GrANMa!!

Fun thought... now off to rename my summer trip to Gdansk, Stockholm and Istanbul.

GdanStockIst?
GdanStoBul?
GdanStanbul?

I think I like GStockanbul.

(GStHelinn would have been so much easier, but my trip got changed ;-)

I use MS Outlook as my main email program, and I like to store my emails by type. Those that start with "A" are at the top of my folder list, so this year's trip has to be in folder "A European Adventure 2024" so they're at the top of my inbox folders. (Last year's has been archived ...)

Neither clever nor entertaining, but it works.

My trips are planned out in three month segments. So, I name them by the time of year.

Right now I'm on my "Spring 2024" trip. I use this on Tripit and a separate email folder where I keep all the confirmations or the emails pertinent to that trip. (The email folder is actually "Travel--Spring 2024")

Our recent trips have been to just one or two countries, so naming has just been saying that country, or both.

For Rome, Greece, Albania, and North Macedonia, how about “Tour of the Columns?” I suspect you’ll see lots of original classical columns.

For Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, with a tiny bit of France, how about “Morspaportance?”

I usually don't have a lot of countries per trip so I use "Ireland24" or Swiss23". I think it's very useful to add a 2 digit year to my directory name, to distinguish it from "Swiss19" or such. My photos directories use this directory name, my emails are put into a subdirectory with a name like that, and in my web browser (Firefox), I have the bookmarks for the trip in a subdirectory of that name.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who likes to come up with non-sensible names sometimes. I love the creativity!

Gstockanbul!

GrANMa!

Morspaportance!

Made me laugh! Thanks all!

Oh, Lane, since you're going to Italy first, perhaps your trip can be Italian GrANMa!

This.

Next trip is just simply "England October 2024".

Haha, I really like your creativity Lane. I am going to think how I can name my trips in a more fun fashion.

Cyn - I really love this !!

I am so glad to see other people name their trips! Like some of you, I have “Folder Names” for files and relevant emails, but I also have a personal theme for trips most of the time.

  • in 2018 it was “Mountains, Lakes, and Sea” when we went to the Jungfrau Region, Val Gardena, Lausanne, Stresa, and Liguria
  • In 2021 it was the “We’re Back!” tour (after Covid restrictions were lifted)
  • In 2017 we hit several countries over 2 months for a “Grand European Tour”
  • another year (2019?) it was the “Favorite Places” trip where we only went back to a couple of place we love, no new-to-us locations

Other times I am a bit more functional: “Fall 2024 Italy and Switzerland” for now. Gotta think of a theme!

“Tour of Columns” is brilliant!

I wish I was creative :) in naming, but my main process is mostly centered around "file management" and not creative content. So, on my computer as I am building files and ideas for a trip or later managing the photos and videos accumulated, it just ends up being something like "2023 10 Spain - Portugal" or "2023 05 Netherlands". This allows the default sorting in my "Travel" folder to go from oldest to newest and I can quickly and easily find a particular travel event.

Boring but effective.

Lane, I have to tell you that RoGrANoMa immediately called to mind Roger Enema. :-)

But I do love the idea of naming trips! What about "From Rome to NoMa"?

VAP, my names are similar and boring, but since I use them for file mgmt, they have to be instantly recognizable. Last year was 2023 Scotland. This year was 2024 England. Next year is 2025 London (although I'm probably tackiing Paris on so maybe I need to change that).

How about MorAl-Andalus? I would like to know how search engines and KIs of your social media accounts react on this. ;-)

How about MorAl-Andalus?

Wow, I just learned something new! I'd never heard the term "Al-Andalus." I looked it up, and it almost works, except part of my trip will be in Basque country, which was not part of Al-Andalus. Still, it's so clever, maybe I should adjust my itinerary so it fits!

Good point. I don't use these made-up titles as keywords on my blog. I hope the search engines don't get too upset.

perhaps your trip can be Italian GrANMa!

This gave me a big laugh. I'm actually going back to Greece for a few days after North Macedonia, so maybe Italian Granmagre? Doesn't have quite the same ring...

The Morocco plus Iberia trip is actually in this order: Morocco, Spain, France, Spain, Portugal, Spain. Morspafraspaporspa?

I'm so happy to see that many of you are more clever and witty than I am! I do love "Tour of Columns," which is maybe not so witty but really captures an important thematic aspect of that trip. Also "Mountains, Lakes, and Sea." It is perfect!

I'm also going to Southeast Asia in December with Overseas Adventure Travel. They call the tour "Ancient Kingdoms," but I've so far been organizing everything under "Southeast Asia 2024." I can be boring too!

Haha it hasn't taken long to go from naming trips to revising trips based on the names !!

Thanks for feedback and interesting thread.

In this case I was really interested once in that part of history because Europe was in some "disciplines" far behind these cultures (health, education, art). Still today you will find lots of influences and rests of this culture, e. g. UNESCO World Heritage Sites Alhambra in Grenada or parts of the old town of Córdoba.

I think with travel naming is more or less similar with product and brand naming. Options (to be enhanced?)

  • Choose a functional describing combination of words / word parts (BMW; originally not for cars)
  • Choose a motto name / sentence (Volkswagen)
  • Choose a fantasy or insiring name (Mercedes)
  • Choose a name of a wish or hope (BYD)
  • Choose a "feels like" or contextual name (Google)
  • only for companies (?): founder's name (Ford)
  • Chosse an interim project name and forget renaming (Apple)
  • Avoid names of military operations (something around conquering ...)

Derived from this the question of what is a purpose of this journey? Do not ask "why" but "what for".

Curious with which name you will end up.

As London is the focus of my many trips over the years I do name my sojourns. The one I’m planning for the Fall is named Andy Murray as I hope to include Edinburgh, Glasgow and The Kelpies on this meander.

Previous London trips were named: Agatha Christie, Maggie Smith, Sir Anthony ( Anthony Hopkins ) , Dame Maggie, (Maggie Smith) Cary Grant and Martin Shaw.

All file folders on the iPhone with accommodation emails, packing list and wanna see list. The latter included sites, theatre, galleries, as well as directions to where I was staying. Also included a list of pubs, parks and libraries to experience.

EDIT: My trip to Havana was titled Fidel, WashingtonD.C. for Obama’s 1st Inaugural was Obamaland and my visit the Cape Kennedy to see a shuttle launch was Gordo ( in honor of my favorite astronaut Gordon Cooper.)

So yes I like to name my trips.

I name all of my trips "Bob" I just finished "Bob 53"

By the way, that is absolutely true. It's a tradition going back to a joke at University in the 70's.

See I don't find it boring, it's succinct, is descriptive and gets right to the point. Vocabulary is a terrible thing to waste.

Hey, Lane, since your trip that starts in Morocco won’t include Russia, how about, “The Not Russia trip?”

Or, highlight where you’re spending the least amount of time, and call it Basque Plus.

All my trip info - emails, pdfs, word and excel docs, urls, and photos - is stored digitally, so I have names that are easy to remember when I want to look back. So the names are banal - like Xmas2022 (Christmas markets in Budapest, Vienna, French riviera and Barcelona) or SE Asia 2018 (Hong Kong, Macau, Vietnam, Thailand).

Beltherway is nice, easy to remember, but RoGrANoMa? Aside from being harder to type, will you remember what it means in 5 years?

How about "Classical World" or "Classical Antiquity"? I'm not sure how Albania fits in there though ...

Chat GPT says: How about "Mediterranean Mosaic: A Journey Through Morocco, Iberia, and a French Flair"? It captures the diverse and vibrant cultures of your trip while highlighting the slight French touch.
and
"How about "Ancient Echoes: A Balkan and Roman Odyssey"? It reflects the historical depth and cultural richness of Rome, Greece, Albania, and North Macedonia."

I don't normally use AI, but my 21 year-old son suggested to try it!
