My trip to Europe in August

Hi everyone! I would like some travel advice. I'm a 25 yo male and I will be travelling alone to Europe. I think I've been pretty smart about my trip but I am wondering how much spending money I should bring.

I will be in Europe for 11 days and 10 nights. I have already purchased my hostels, airfare and Eurail pass. I will be visiting London (2) Paris (2) Amsterdam (3) and Berlin (3).

I'm really good at anticipating how much money I'll spend. I have currently set aside the equivalent of $1500.00 Euro just for spending money. That is roughly $150.00 a day. I don't plan on spending nearly 3/4 of that, but what do you guys think? All the hostels I'll be staying at include breakfast, I figure I'll skip lunch, pay no more than 10 Euro for a light dinner, no more than 15 Euro for attractions, and around 30 Euro for drinks at the bar. Oh yeah and at most 10 Euro on transportation per day.. That comes out to $65 Euro, which leaves 85 Euro for impulse buys... So please comment if you think $1500.00 Euro for an 11 day 10 night trip will do. Thanks!

Hi James,

Yes I'm frugal, lol! I just can't see myself spending money on any other things that I mentioned. Do you think honestly think I can get by on that type of budget just for spending money?

Of course I'll always have my credit card in case something happens...

Thanks James. Oh yeah I didn't anticipate the drink buying for the girls. I would plan on spending around 90 Euro a day then.

Sounds like you have enough money budgeted.

I note that you are planning to spend 3 times as much on drinking than you plan to spend on eating, but I suppose there's no accounting for tastes (or for being 25 and single ;). If that's your priorities, who am I to argue? You'll survive - although there will be great food there, and the actual drinks you consume might be undistinguishable from those at home (except more expensive). No comment on the girls you'll be buying drinks for...

All kidding aside, the only thing that looks worth some thought and re-examination is your rapid pace. Just two days in London and Paris is not a lot of time to see much of those great cities (especially if you wake up at noon every day with a raging hangover, and spend most of the night in a bar...). OK, OK, it's your trip, and I might make similar choices if I was 25 and footloose. Still, you're going a long way and spending some serious coin for the trip; yes, you should always remember that you can come back another time, but any trip to Europe is a special event in your life, and there's a lot to see and do (besides getting hammered and chasing skirts - not that there's anything wrong with that). I'd just suggest you remind yourself to stop and smell the flowers once in a while so your memories of the trip aren't ONLY your experiences in the bars.

Have fun - I'm sure you will.

You are a 25 yr old male.. you WILL spend more then 10 euros a day on food/meals. Hostel breakies are not massive bacon and egg fests,, in fact, in some hostels if you don't get down early you are left with a bowl of cereal and a bit of bread and jam,,, so if that holds you over till dinner, theN I am amazed.. LOL I have a thin 13 yr old girl who needs more food then that..

I think your budget is ok though,, I think you will spend a bit more on food and a little less on drink.. you really don't plan to drink every night do you?? LOL Watch out for Coke ( soda) ,, never order it in a resto,, costs more then house wine often.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the advice. I do wish I had more time, however I only have just under two weeks. Plus I really wanted to see Amsterdam and Berlin... I hope I have a good time in London, the only reason I'm going is because they offered the cheapest flights departing Miami.

The food in Berlin is going to be the cheapest of any of those cities, so you will be able to eat well there. I would not skip lunch since many restaurants offer lunch at a reduced rate. Fill up at lunch and then have your light meal in the evening. Get something at the grocery store or have some ethnic fast food. Try spending your money on things that matter instead of drinking at night. You will find you enjoy things the next day a lot more when you wake with a clear head.

I can't imagine what I would spend 150$ a day on unless I was going to some shows or a really ritzy restaurant.

You are going to have a great time! As much as I hate to say it, you might skip Paris, 2 days isn't enough. London is fun and Amsterdam is a blast. If breakfast is small, grab a loaf of fresh bread and cheese/ butter. Eat from vendors, go to the ones with the lines of people. The beer can be stronger, drink a lot of water and keep the hostel business card in your pocket so you can get home. Stay aware and wear a money belt -not just for older folks-to keep money, credit cards and your passport (wrapped in a baggie so it won't get sweat stained). Keep what you are going to spend that night in your front pants pocket. You might check out the couchsurfing.org website, I use it to meet people in new places, go for a drink, etc.; usually they will take you around to their special places in the city- the majority of surfers are your age. I would definitely do it for Amsterdam, there is a lot of entertainment and different quality in the "coffee houses" that locals would know about.
Have fun,, we will be there in September, so leave some beer, etc.
Your budget sounds wonderful, we are doing it on 100
