My most ambitious itinerary yet - Paris, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Czechia, Poland!

Hello all, I have been toying around with this rough itinerary for some months now. It's a bit of a "Frankenstein" itinerary, basically trying to string together places I have yet to visit with places I want to visit again. My main goal for this trip is Ancient and Medieval history. The timeline would be 2020 mid-May to late-July/early-August and a total of 70-80 nights. I have come up with two versions so far:

At this moment I think I'm leaning more towards version 2, to put the potentially hot places at the beginning of the itinerary, rather than at the end. I have a few questions though:

  1. Do these itineraries follow a relatively logical flow? Except for Rome and Pairs (already have been there) are there any places I am neglecting in terms of time?

  2. I would like my father to join me for part of this trip, the best case would be if we could do a RS tour together during a portion of this trip, other than the ones I've listed are there any that could also fit in? (unfortunately the 2020 Switzerland ones are all sold out for when we plan to go🙁!)

  3. With all the train travel on this trip, I'm thinking that an Interail Pass may be a good investment. I can get a 2 month one for € 548, would that make sense?

I will follow up with more questions regarding specifics but I just wanted to get the overall big picture down first. Thank you all so very much in advance, Europe experts, for your help with all of this!

A question to add:

In some of my italicized transport lines I have some question marks, which means I am unsure which transportation option is best, the most difficult one is how to get from Innsbruck to St. Moritz? Ideas?

Very first impression.

For ancient history I miss Greece and maybe also places like Istanbul or Sofia.

For medieval history (later stage) I miss places in Germany, e.g. Aachen, Cologne (not much old stuff but mid Rhine Valley castles tour), Nuremberg, Augsburg (Jakob Fugger, likely the richest man in history) or Lübeck (Hanse trade empire).

Also Granada and Sevilla in Spain will give a real different impression to a very special part of European history (Moors).

Knowing that this increases your possible itinerary but wanted to contribute to your main goals. With your listed targets you would see a very limited part of that history.

Tip: as robust traveler use night trains.

I wondered about Turin (where I've never been) and Googled. There seems to be a lot of Roman stuff there, and it is reported to be a very interesting, non-touristy city. Just a thought.

I haven't been to southeastern Switzerland but have read that St. Moritz is expensive and not terribly attractive. A quick Google for photos tends to support the latter. I think Pontresina was suggested as an alternative place to stay.

I have doubts about the advisability of the InterRail pass. It looks as if your high-cost trips will be those within Switzerland, Swiss border-Paris and Paris-Barcelona. I wonder whether just something Swiss would work out better financially. Won't you be able to get bargain tickets in and out of Paris by buying early?

@MarkK - there is a reason why I make a U around Germany this time around, I have a dedicated Holy Roman Empire trip in the works, but that's in a few years :)

Regarding ancient history, I am very much interested in seeing Etruscan art in Etruria. Roman sites in Naples Archaeological Museum and Pompeii. And Ancient Greek sites from Magna Graecia (southern Italy).

For medieval history I am interested in seeing sites pertaining to the warring states period in Italy (1300-1500), especially following the exploits of John Hawkwood. I'm also very interested in castle architecture, which I will hopefully get my fill of in Austria, Switzerland, and Moravia.

@Acraven - I had thought about getting just a pass for Swiss rail, I'm not sure if the specialty trains like the Glacier express or Golden Pass will be included though, I will have to do some more research. Thank you for the tip about St. Moritz, I will look at Pontresina as an alternative.
