My husband and I leaving for London, Paris, Florence and Rome soon and I am wondering about getting into museums. How can we avoid the lines or are there going to be long lines in mid May? I would love any advice you could give us!! Thanks
I have never stood in a line for a museum or art gallery. But then again, I go on RS tours every summer and with his tours you do not stand in any lines to speak off. Not a good answer but I could not help it. aloha charlie
make sure you get the Museum Pass in Paris for the Louvre. They have a special entrance for pass holders. For Florence, make sure you get the rez for Uffizi, etc. Otherwise you will have to wait in line. It's been a while that I've been in London and Rome, I'm assuming they have some sort of pass/special entrance. Early AM or Late PM are always good, but give yourself at least 2 hours for museums so you can see everything without feeling rushed. Check out the RS guidebooks, the Best of Europe includes all of these cities.
You should be in OK shape since you're visiting in mid-May. The summer crowds will not be around yet. However, if you're itinerary is set, I'd go ahead and make reservations at museums that take them. You won't need to do anything in London. I'm not as sure about Paris. I've been to Paris in Sept and just purchased tickets at the door and walked in. In Italy you can make reservations for the Accademia and Uffizi in Florence and Vatican and Borghese in Rome (required for the Borghese). Good luck.
Unless there was a special exhibit on, I have never had to get in any appreciable line for a Museum- except the louvre and van gogh Museum. Those two always seem to be popular
