what bags are allowed in most museums in europe/ie: can we keep our lap top with us/ are there any size constraints/ what would we have to check/ if we have to check, is it safe?
Most museums require that all bags (from luggage to small shopping bags) be left at the coat check. In general I suppose it's safe, but anything can happen.
It depends on the rules of the museum and the size of the bag. I recently visited the Prado in Madrid and was able to keep my smaller messenger bag with me…larger bags must be checked in the cloakroom. Just be careful about leaving anything of value in your bag when checking it…the museum will typically indicate that they’re not responsible for damage, etc. You could take a look at the rules for each museum you plan to visit online before your trip…might help.
elizabeth,
The rules at Museums vary somewhat between countries and locations. Most require bags to be checked and some are especially strict about this (such as the Borghese Gallery in Rome).
You might find that it's preferable to leave the Laptop back in your Hotel room.
Cheers!
Most do not allow backpacks, big umbrellas and other baggage. If it fits in your pocket then they usually let it in.
Anything checked is done at your risk.
