Murren-Gimmelwald and biking

Has anyone stayed in Murren? How do you actually get there, say from Zurich? Did anyone ever do the biking recommended by Rick Steves from Murren to Gimmalwald? Is it a difficult ride? How long does it take? Must you be an advanced biker? Thank you!

I haven't biked there, but the road from Murren to Gimmelwald is paved and gently descends. If you can operate the brakes on a bicycle, you can handle this simple ride. I recall it taking me about 20 minutes to walk up hill in the opposite direction.

Carla, Getting to Mürren from Zurich is very easy! Travel by train from Zurich HBf to Interlaken Ost. Trip is about 1H:55M usually with one change in Bern. When you arrive at Interlaken Ost, buy a ticket to Mürren. This ticket covers all modes of transport. You should be able to buy all your tickets in Zurich. Take the local Berner Oberland train to Lauterbrunnen. It's a very short trip, about 20 minutes. When you arrive in Lauterbrunnen, walk across the street and transfer to the Post Bus (it's bright yellow, you can't miss it). That will take you to Stechelberg and the Cable Car terminal. Walk up the stairs and board the Cable Car. The first leg is steep and spectacular, and that will take you to Gimmelwald. When you arrive there, walk across the platform and board the next Cable Car. In a few minutes, you'll be disembarking in Mürren. There's another route that travels via Cable Car from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp, and then the Bergbahn Lauterbrunnen-Mürren railway. I prefer the other route, but your choice. I've never taken the bike trip, but I doubt that it's too difficult. The "trail" from Mürren to Gimmelwald is a bit narrow, but it's paved. If you travel slowly, you shouldn't have any problems. Have a look at this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJsl0GvLJEk The video is a bit "dated", but will provide some idea. One point to note is that it shows Rick riding a Funicular back to Mürren at the end. That's now been replaced by the Lauterbrunnen-Grütschalp Cable Car. Rick did the trip in about half a day, so that will provide an indication of "how long does it take". I'd suggest wearing a Helmet, if the Bike Shop offers them. Happy travels!

"Has anyone stayed in Murren?" - yep, lots and lots of people have stayed in Mürren. Buy your ticket at the train station in Zurich all the way to Mürren. The ticket counter will print out a card with all of your train #s, track #s, departure times...all the way to Mürren. It's like clock work. I think it's much more enjoyable to WALK down to Gimmelwald than to bike. The walk is gentle and doesn't take too long. The ride would be over WAYYYY too soon. Jump on the gondola in Gimmelwald to go back up to Mürren.

We've stayed in Murren twice and absolutely love it. We rented bikes in Murren and did two different routes, the one from Murren to Gimmelwald is, as Tom said, all down hill on a paved path. It took us maybe 10 min. The other route we took, I would not recommend. I agree with Tim, walking from Murren to Gimmelwald is much better. There's no point in renting bikes for a 10 min ride. But you could ride to Gimmelwald, then take the cable car down to the valley floor and ride there. Then back up on the cable car.

Wow, you all have been so helpful. Thank you so much. I feel like this is something I can tackle. On the DVD, it looks so "out in the middle of nowhere" and impossible to reach, but you all make it sound easier than that. Thank you for your tips.

Few mins downhill. Proper road. Very steep drops down on one side (still ok for cows....). Not a challenging cycle physically!
