Hi,
My fiancé and I are planning our first ever Europe trip. We were wondering if it is realistic to go from Munich and end off in Rome on May in 9 dats. How many days in Munich would you suggest? Can we take an overnight rain then to Venice? Looking for any tips and must see's!
Thanks!
We lived near Munich some years ago and took the overnight train from Munich to Rome, that worked nicely.
I would plan a couple of days to see the city, as well as trips to Salzburg, Austria or the Fussen, Garmisch area of Germany.
Also, if you can swing it, take a Romantic Road tour to Rothenburg on the Tauber.
You can probably find a train to Venice on your way to Rome.
There is the Night Jet night train going from Munich to Venice, I take night trains but have not for this route.
Hi, I am planning the same trip, Munich to Rome in 10 days, 9 nights. I just started, and will likely be asking some ot the same questions. :)
Given that your trip is only 9 days, I would spend it all in one country if possible (in this case, Italy), because you spend time in transit when you're zigzagging to far flung places. Is there a reason you're going to Munich and Rome on the same trip? You could have a great trip with just Rome, Florence and Venice and it will take all 9 days...at least those three cities are geographically not to far off.
In doing some research for a one-way from MUC to VCE, I came across Air Dolomiti. It is under the Lufthansa umbrella and has some good choices between MUC and northern Italy.
I personally do not like overnight trains. I've never slept well on them and lose a lot of quality sightseeing time the next day to make it worth the possible cost savings - which these days is not that much. I would fly from Munich to Venice and then train from there to Rome, just be aware that a good bit of those 9 days will be spent in travel or recuperating from travel. If you truly have 9 full days in Europe, not including international travel (if coming from US or other non-European country), then I would spend 3 nights in Munich, fly to Venice, spend 2 nights (1-1/2 days), then train to Rome for the rest of my time.
So, to answer your question "wondering if it is realistic" - yes it's certainly logistically realistic (ie: possible), whether or not it's enjoyably feasible is another question. Research the travel options, night train/day train/ flying, and decide if that leaves you enough time in your chosen cities to enjoy your visit.
Read this thread for some ideas. Check skyscanner for flight options. You can also check RometoRio for general trasnport options.
