Munich and neighboring cities

Hi, we are planning a 14 days holiday to Munich on 29 December 2017 to 11 of January 2018. And during our stay, we thought of visiting nearby cities such as Salzburg, Zurich, Venice and Milan. Do you think its a good idea base on traveling from one place to another? Or would you be able to suggest any other better routes base. I would prefer not to travel more then 5h from one city to another.

We will be flying in to Munich and out from Munich.

You have an interesting concept of the term "neighboring". Are you aware that you are talking about multiple Alp crossings, in winter?

I am not saying this isn't possible, but do make sure you understand the weather and road conditions for that season, and allow for enough traveling time.

Just rereading your post: I am not sure I get this right. Do you mean to say that you plan to stay in Munich and do day trips to those cities from there? That doesn't seem feasible to me.

My recommendation would be: Stay either north or south of the Alps that time of year. Or, if you do want to cross the Alps, do it once only and get an open jaw flight.

Edit:
Just saw that you posted the same question in another section of the forum. Once is enough please, or people will waste their time replying to questions that have already been answered elsewhere.

Salzburg is really easy by train from Munich, as are the little towns on the romantic road. I've had itineraries that included Munich and Venice but it included Salzburg, Innsbruck/Hall in Tirol, and Verona before Venice. The drives were still too long so I've shortened by daily travel legs since then.

I'm going to assume that you didn't intend to do these cities as day trips from Munich. With the exception of Salzburg, this would be impractical. Especially in winter. But let's see what you could do with a multi stay circular route.

Arrive Munich. Stay 3 nights. On one day, day trip to Salzburg by train.

Train to Zurich. Stay 3 nights.

Train to Milan. Stay 2 nights.

Train to Venice. Stay 3 nights.

Train back to Munich for the remainder of your trip. Day trip to nearby German towns.

This might work. But there's always the risk of travel disruption when you're going through the Alps in winter. You'd have to be prepared to alter plans on the fly.

You will be there in the Winter and you need to consider weather. It does snow in some of these cities this time of the year.

You might not want to rent a car and drive.

Also, Venice and Milan are a considerable distance from Munich. There is a lot to see from Munich. Consider a tour to Rothenburg on the Taber on the Romantic Road, Augsburg and Garmish/Fussen/Oberamergau.
