Munic lodging before flight

We (two couples) will be arriving in MUC by train late afternoon or early evening on a Saturday in early May with a flight out the next day departing at 2pm. I am seeking advice about the easiest mode of lodging and transportation. Should we stay near the train station, Hauptbahnhof, enabling us to take the S-Bahn to the airport the next morning? Is one able to walk to/from lodging near the central train station? We're most likely interested in a walk and dinner that last night, so looking for something easy and stress-free. Does anyone have experience with staying at the Hilton that is right at the airport? Are there lodging/dining areas near the airport that have easy access (rides) to the airport? Thanks for any information.

With. 2:00 pm flight, there is no need to stay at the airport. Spend that night in Munich and enjoy the evening.

I suggest you stay in the Marienplatz area which has much more to offer than the train station area. There is a Marienplatz S-Bahn station, and the trip to the airport is shorter than it is from the Hauptbahnhof ( assuming you take it in the right direction). There are a number of nice hotels closeby; we chose this one which I believe is a RS recommendation. They told us his tour had just stayed there the night before our arrival.

We have stayed at the Hilton at the airport. It is the only hotel within easy walking distanced the airport. None of the hotels nearby provide transportation. There are several food options at the airport, including a nice Biergarten.

That said, I would not stay there when your flight is at 2pm. I would stay near the train station. I can recommend Hotel Metropol. It’s on a quiet side street, a block from the station. Excellent breakfast.

You could also stay in Freising. I would choose that over the airport Hilton for SURE. You can have dinner at the Weihenstephan brewery / beer garden or just somewhere in downtown Freising. It's easy to get a bus to the airport, and it's worlds prettier than the area near the Hauptbahnhof, and the pace is more relaxed for a last night in Europe.
