Multi-city flight search

We are starting to plan our honeymoon for August 28, 2016 - September 11, 2016 (dates are only minimally flexible). We are doing the west cost of Ireland and then Spain: Barcelona & Malaga. I've started to look at flight prices for MSP-DUB, DUB-BCN, AGP-MSP (flying into Shannon is more expensive so we're thinking of driving from Dublin to west coast and then back to Dublin for flight to Spain (we've done the Dublin to west coast of Ireland drive before), and then we were thinking of taking a train from Barcelona to Malaga). For the flight itinerary above, I'm seeing $1331 per person.

I know this is a very specific question, but for anyone with insight do you think this is a good price?

Also would you recommend taking a train from Barcelona to Malaga, or adding a flight to the above itinerary for that part too?

You'll get more help if you say which countries and which cities. Otherwise it is us throwing darts with our eyes blindfolded.

And with people asking questions here from dozens of countries it becomes an impossible question.

From where?

Well I have used Easyjet, Ryanair, Aer Lingus and Vueling.. all with no problem. Of course no one can give you specifics unless you tell us what countries you are looking at.. my husband has used Tuifly and Air Berlin for Germany.. and I am sure others can give you names of other airlines that concentrate their routes in certain areas.

I just look for best prices and schedule that I need.. but keep in mind with some budget airlines they use less convenient airports ( ie: Ryanair works great for some routes.. but for flights going into Paris they use Beauvais airport which is far less convenient and easy to commute to and from)

I just book on each airlines own website and READ the terms carefully.. luggage charges , etc.. nothing is hidden,,but many folks skip over details and then are disappointed to discover they purchased a ticket they can't change, or that they have to pay more to check their luggage at the airport then to prepurchase a checked bag option online in advance.
I don't buy the extras like seat selection because flights are so short I can live without sitting next to my partner for an hour , and I don't purchase food etc .. for same reasons.. flights are short.. they are just to get us places.

Did you just alter your post.. lol.. I didn't see the specifics when I created my reply..

For Dublin we used Aer Lingus to Marjorrca ( spain).. but to Dublin we used Ryanair from London.

Sorry everyone for the confusion on my original post...I thought I was supposed to have a general description of the new topic I was adding and then add my question separately. But I saw after submitting, that my question should have been included in the description. So yes, I had to update it. Thanks!

I am still confused. Are you asking if $1331 is a good price for the three leg flight that you have described? If so, yes, an excellent price when you consider that RT are running in that same price range.

To begin with, congratulations on your upcoming nuptials!

A few thoughts......

  • You shouldn't have too much trouble finding flights from MSP to DUB. I haven't checked on costs from MSP to Toronto, but one option you might want to look at is WestJet flights from there to Dublin. They're just getting started on those routes, so have been offering a lot of good deals.
  • For the flight from DUB to BCN, you'll likely have to use either RyanAir or Aer Lingus. RyanAir has a reputation for nicking unwary customers with a lot of extra charges if they don't follow the rules precisely. That includes things like baggage weights and printing boarding passes beforehand, so pay close attention to that.
  • Travel by train from Barcelona to Malaga is certainly an option. There are high speed AVE trains on that route with no changes and a travel time of ~5H:54M.
  • I haven't checked, but you may not find a lot of options from AGP to MSP as Malaga is a smaller airport. You may have to take the train to a larger centre (Madrid or Barcelona), and then connect with a direct flight there.

Good luck with your planning!

It's an okay price, but I just have the feeling that you could do better. I plugged your itinerary into Google Flights (https://www.google.com/flights/#search;iti=MSP_DUB_2016-08-28*DUB_BCN,YJB_2016-09-04*AGP,YJM_MSP_2016-09-11;tt=m) and got the same $1331 you did. If you are able to depart from Chicago instead, it drops to $1196. If you play with the dates somewhat, you can eek out some additional savings, but you don't have that much wiggle room. To get good prices from a non-east coast airport, you really have to be flexible on when you travel, which isn't the case here.

Nevertheless, it's your honeymoon -- if the flight times and destinations are perfect for you, don't worry so much about the price. That will be much sooner forgotten than the memories created.

But you still didn't say where you're beginning and ending your trip. Help comes with complete information.

@David, it's Minneapolis (MSP). The original post says "I've started to look at flight prices for MSP-DUB, DUB-BCN, AGP-MSP."

My sense is that this is indeed a good price. However, it can make sense to book your inter-Europe flights separate from your round trip. In your case, book MSP-DUB and back AGP-MSP on one ticket. Then find the best carrier DUB-BCN and book that individually. I have not been to Ireland so can't help with that part of your schedule.

With budget carriers (Vueling, Ryan Air, etc) be sure to check their policies about luggage - the limits are smaller and the fees for going over can add up. Also, I think some cheap flights to "Barcelona" fly into Girona, which is lovely if you want to visit that area of Catalunya but not at all convenient for Barcelona!

Barcelona to Malaga - the train is 6 hours. Book in advance to get a good fare. A plane would be faster, but maybe not once you factor in time getting to the airport, getting there 2 hours ahead of time, landing, and then getting into your hotel on the other end. I'd take the train, but I dislike the whole flying process. Wherever there is a reasonable train I will take it.
