Am traveling with some people to the three cities above and someone asked if I knew any movies that featured or were filmed in any of these locations. None came to mind...anyone else?
Terry - for Vienna try "The Third Man" (1949) with Orson Welles and Joseph Cotton. Classic mystery.
I second "The Third Man." For a more modern take on Vienna, see "Before Sunrise," from the mid-1990s.
Last fall I saw a Hungarian movie called "Chameleon" (its English title) which I think takes place in Budapest. It's a darkly funny movie about poor con men who take advantage of rich women.
Milos Forman's "Amadeus" is supposed to play in Vienna but was filmed mostly in Prague.
"The Shop Around the Corner" takes place in Budapest, but it's about as Hungarian as Count Chocula is Romanian.
1) Google 2) "Movies set in Budapest" 3) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_shot_in_Budapest 4) repeat for Vienna & Prague
A lot of movies are done in Prague. Movies crossing my mind where at least part of them were filmed in Prague: Mission Impossible, Euro Trip, Casino Royale, Amadeus. Many American directors are using Barrandov Film Studio in Prague because it's cheaper.
I know I can google these... I was looking for recommendations from people who have seen the movies, traveled to Europe, and then would recommend someone else to watch them. Thanks for these... I am starting a list to pass on to my friends, and I have a whole new list of movies to rent!
Just watched The Third Man...wonderful, and it is available and free on youtube. Incredible photography and lighting....so a snowy day in Michigan and popcorn for dinner and a great movie....Recommend it to all.
The movie Hostel was filmed in Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Vienna......but not really a movie one wants to watch before a trip to Eastern Europe. Unless you like gore, gore, and more gore, oh and guts and blood.
Can't find the movie Chameleon... any ideas? I found other films with the same title, but not that one.
Also... The Shop Around the Corner...is it good, even though maybe not authentic?
"The Shop Around the Corner" is a great film- Jimmy Stewart doing what he did best. You've probably seen the 1990s remake: "Sleepless in Seattle". The characters at least all have Hungarian names, but other than that, this movie could just have easily taken place in Indianapolis or Milwaukee with hardly any rewriting. EDIT: Oops, sorry, wrong Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks movie. I meant "You've Got Mail". And my quick Wikipedia search reveals that it takes place in Budapest because it's an adaptation of a Hungarian play.
Tom... thanks, it will be next on my list.
For Vienna, "Before Sunrise." They walk around Vienna all night so you really see the city.
