motorhome road trip

We are planning a 5 week road trip starting in Italy and ending in France. We have read that you really dont need to RSVP camping spots and our better off just finding a place as you travel each day ? does anyone have any experience with this ? we are traveling June 24th to July 31st

James, check out this website: http://gormanstories.com/v/prep This family went on a motorhome trip in Europe last year and have documented everything about their trip from the planning to their return back to the States. Maybe you can contact them ref RSVPing campgrounds. Have fun on your trip!

james,

One point to keep in mind for driving in Italy, is that each driver will require the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which must be used in conjunction with your home D.L. Failure to produce an I.D.P. if requested can result in fines on the spot!

Although you probably won't be travelling too far in the city centres, you may want to have a look at the posts here relating the the "ZTL" areas (passing through the automated cameras results in a €100+ fine EACH TIME).

Cheers!

Our family has campervanned through northern Italy, southern Germany, Austria and France. I would recommend to you to at least identify - using a guidebook - camping spots in Italy, as, AFAIK, they are all private and somewhat sparse. This is happily not the case in France, where even the smallest villages typically have a municipal campground that's very reasonably priced and has showers, etc.

We bought this guide: http://tinyurl.com/y2abm6b
and it was very helpful. You'll enjoy the Italian campgrounds... apparently many exist as a means of having a vacation home for less affluent Italians. You'll see what I mean when you enter your first camp spot there. It's kind of crazy but fun!

I'd also recommend getting the smallest motorhome that you could conceivably be comfortable in. We encountered a road in an Italian village that required us to stop, back up, and turn around because it became too narrow for our VW California campervan!
