We are planning a 4 or 5 week trip beginning mid July or so. This is in the beginning stages, but we would like to visit smallish or mid-size towns in Eastern and maybe Northern Europe that are especially easy and relaxing to navigate on foot.
So, we hope to have an easy time seeing sights (and sometimes seeing nature) walking, and also not having to dodge cars and bicycles.
I do realize that many great cities have lots of bike traffic, and we may visit some of them, but we would like ideas for where we can not think too much about that, and just enjoy walking for most of every day.
Gdańsk on Poland's Baltic coast comes to mind. Most of the main sights are concentrated in the compact old medieval port. In recent years Gdańsk has become quite popular with European tourists, not so much with Americans though. Here's a nice article from Lonely Planet detailing historic Gdańsk: Walking the history of Gdańsk
"...smallish or mid-size towns" up north in Germany? From where to where? Westfalen to the Danish border? In that case, lots of choices.
I would suggest Schwerin, Ludwigslust, Eutin/Hostein, Soest/Westfalen, Minden, Schleswig, Husum, Greifswald, Flensburg, Stade. Lüneburg,
In Poland I second the choice of Gdansk suggested by Carlos, also Gniew, which survived the war intact, Chelmno on the Vistula, and nearby Grudziadz, Torun,
It's hard to know how you define small and medium size, but a few suggestions in Sweden are: Lund, Varberg, Lysekil, Strömstad, Visby, Norrtälje, Mora, Härnösand, Vadstena, Lidköping and Mariestad.
When you say Eastern Europe, what countries do you mean exactly?
I mean the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and the Baltic States. We could be interested in other places, if we had more info on them, but this seems like a lot so far. Thanks for checking.
