Mosel Valley or Rhine?

Having a hard time deciding between the two - do not have enough time to spend at both - probably looking at one - two days at one or the o9ther....

Susan, I was in the Rhine valley last week and had a great time. I stayed at the Rhein Hotel (www.rheinhotel-stgoar.de) for three nights. The owner, Gil, is a trained chef and prepares meals for his guests, upon request. Actually ate there two nights! As already said, the Mosel is much slower paced and quieter, but I enjoyed St. Goar very much. I spent one day touring the Rhine Valley, and one day on the Mosel. If you have a car you can do both quite easily. If not, I would pick the Rhine. Lots of castles and great little towns.

If you have to choose one, I'd probably start with the Rhine and see the Mosel on a return trip.

I like both. As James said, they're different. On your first trip, you will probably prefer the sites on the Rhine.

You can probably squeeze in at least a glimpse of both. It's tricky to get to or from the Mosel without passing through Koblenz, which is the starting point of the Rhine's most scenic region.

You could stay in Cochem on the Mosel for 2 nights, then see the Rhine just south of Koblenz briefly on your way in or out. By train, it's easy to drop your bags in a locker in Koblenz, take a train 12 minutes south to Braubach for a tour or Marksburg Castle - www.marksburg.de - then return to Koblenz for your departure. Or take a train south to Boppard, 14 minutes away on the west bank, which has a pleasant river promenade and main square as well as a fetching chairlift ride to a lookout over the river gorge.
