More on Post Departure Insurance: Healthcare and Med Evac

Today I called AMEX to cancel the month to month Insurance that I obtained for our recent trip to Europe. I paid for three months coverage, although we were there for only two weeks. The extra time was caused by setting the plan up in advance so I had all the plan documents, etc.

When I canceled, I was offered an automatic plan that would charge my credit card on a one time basis ($14.95 per ticket) any time I purchased airfare to a foreign destination. The coverage will be automatic from the time of departure to return and will only cost the previously mentioned one time charge.

Pretty good deal I thought and one less detail to worry about when arranging the trip.

And that $14.95 included Medevac service? If the coverage is even half decent, that's the deal of the century! Medevac insurance can be VERY pricey.

Low prices too good to be true can be caused by low coverage limits, exclusions, or other policy provisions that greatly reduce the risk to the insurer of having to make a large payout. A tedious reading of the details of the coverage would be necessary to sort all this out. I saw an example of "med evac" insurance that limited payout to $10,000 when many med evac situations have been reported here on this forum to be $30,000 on up. So I would advise people to understand these important details before relying on them.

If you have AAA - check out their insurance for medevac, hospitalization overseas etc.. - about $50 for great coverage -

AARP also has great coverage should you fall into that age range.

Try DAN (DiversAlertNetwork.com). The Med.Evac. Insurance is about $50 per year for a couple. This is for $100,000 limit in med. evac. only. You don't have to be a diver to buy their insurance and they also have trip insurance available. Have filed two claims with this company, not one problem. Since we take multiple international trips a year, the annual rate is good for us.

I received the Policy from AMEX and will be looking further for trip insurance, as might have been expected, the coverage is pretty minimal. While quoted limits aren't bad, $75,000 for medical and $500,000 for evacuation, the "evacuation" coverage is to the nearest facility capable of providing treatment. Sounds like an ambulance ride would be covered, but getting home from there would be much more difficult.
