I have a Rick Steves moneybelt for an upcoming trip to London and Paris. I've found it's most comfortable to wear at the small of my back, but I'm concerned about safety. My waist isn't THAT far from my back pockets. Am I worried needlessly? Does anyone have suggestions? Thank you!
I haven't worn a waist money belt in years since I did the backpacking thing. But what I remember is I would alternate how I wore it. If I had my heavy pack then it was likely to be lower on my hips, hiking up higher on the small of my back or under my bra strap. It depends on your clothing too. If you are wearing a sweater it will hide some of the bulk, skinny T not so much.
It is supposed to ease your worries so just figure out what works best for you once you start travelling.
Instead of wearing it at the small of your back, I'm thinking the moneybelt was meant to be worn in front at your lower belly. Try it, hope it works for you.
I have used one for years and it has always been in the small of my back. If it's under you clothing I wouldn't worry!
You'll be fine. Wear it in front or back - it doesn't matter much, as long as it's under your clothes. Don't access the moneybelt while on the street. Don't keep ALL of your cash for the entire trip in there. Enjoy the Two Cities.
Thanks all!
IMO wearing it in the middle of your back is the proper way to wear. Those who wear it front as Angela suggests tend to access it hourly. And that is not the intent of wearing a money belt. A money belt should be very hard to get to by both you and the pickpocket.
I think it bears repeating - you wear the money belt UNDER your clothing, tucked in, out of sight. Front or back, it's not exposed to the elements, unless you're wearing a shortly cropped shirt or very low cut pants that will expose your mid section in some way. If you're planning to wear these styles of clothing, a waist belt isn't probably going to work for you - try a neck pouch or one of the around the leg versions.
I gave up my money belt 15 years ago and now carry my valuables in a neck pouch which hangs inside my shirt down at my belt. It is easy to get to and easy to return. Money belts are too cumbersome.
If you wear it, don't wear it in back. It is meant to be worn in front where you can guard it!
RS suggestes wearing it in front.........but wear it how it works best for you. Just becuase I wear my belt in front doesn't mean I access it more than those who wear it in the back. I use the belt as it was intended to be used, I recommend this to everyone.
To view the video clip with RS recommendations go to the top of this page and click on "Rick on TV" On the left hand under "What's New" click on "video clips" then under "European Travel Skills" click on "View Travel Skills Clips" then you will see the "Real Media" link for Moneybelt.........

I wear it differently depending on what I'm doing. If I'm sitting for hours on a train or bus, then I wear it in the back - I think it's more comfortable. If I'm touring or shopping, then I wear it in the front. I often go to a private area (restroom or facing a wall) to get what I need out of it. It only takes a second to get something out or put something back.
