money belts and women

Forget to ask if there is a type of money belt or such that a young woman could use while backpacking in Europe

Hi Chere, I don't know if it's the Incognito Pants Wallet, Hidden Travel Wallet, or Undercover Hidden Pocket, but I have one version from Magellans, http://www.magellans.com/store/Small_Bags___Wallets___Wallets___Money_Belts?page_number=all. The advertising mentions the loops and putting it on your belt, but I don't use it that way. I unzip the wallet and use two large safety pins to pin the pocket to my inner pants waist. I pin it in horizontally along the waistline. I actually have a couple of these wallets, and by pinning into the different pants I plan to take, I can move any items stashed from one pair to the next (avoids the pinning/unpinning of the wallets). Cheers.

Chere I have worn a regular ( around the waist type) moneybelt ,, even with tigher low cut pants... I do not over stuff it like some people do( I don't bother putting things in it like train tickets or flight tickets as most can be reprinted if lost) . I simply have a passport, and my four cards in it( two cc two debit cards) and what ever extra cash ( other then my days supply ) in it. I push it down so it sits under my undies practically, that way it doesn't ride up and show above my pants waist( as I said, I do wear the lower waist pants) . I am lucky that I am no longer in the back packing days,, so I tend to only wear a moneybelt when travelling from place to place, and stay in hotels with safes,, where i normally stash that stuff, so don't have to wear a money belt everyday for regular sightseeing.

The other approach is to wear it high. My wife wears her just under the bra line with the pouch to the rear in the small of her back. Out of the way and not bother by a small backpack. Just experiment with a number of locations till you find one that is comfortable.

You can also try a neck pouch that hangs under your shirt around your neck. Some people sling it over their shoulder under their shirt.

Thing is for women, especially younger ones that wear tighter or lower cut tshirts or tops, the neck pouch is way to lumpy and obvious. I would be unhappy having a lump on top of my tummy where the neck pouch would hit.

I use a smaller neck pouch (Rick's is too long for me). I shorten up the string and wear it over one shoulder. It hangs under my arm and is not noticible under my clothing. I safety pin it to my bra strap for added security, so it can't slip off my shoulder. It is very comfortable.

When I backpacked I wore a neck pouch backwards down my back. I pinned the strap to my bra on both sides so it would neither show nor strangle me. If you wear a backpack with a frame you will never feel the pouch. When I took the backpack off and stowed it in a locker (yes you could still do that thenI'm old) I took the first opportunity in the restroom to move it under my arm where it didn't show and wasn't uncomfortable. After all, your arm already makes your body warm so a pouch there won't add much heat.

My wife likes the neck wallet best. She keeps it under her armpit. It's still obvious when you have a tight t-shirt on, but at least it's safe. If you use one, keep the excess lanyard next to the wallet rather than sticking out your collar.

I know I'm a bit different. But I wear a neck poucharound my waist. the smaller width-strap means it can't be seen by pick pockets. My pouch is just a bit longer than my passport, so it does not get in the way when I sit. In fact, the pouch sits right behind the right front pocket of my khakis. So it's like I have a pocket sewn on the inside of my pants/skirts. I find it more comfortable than the bigger waist-style money belts and than wearing it around my neck. Just a thought...
