My husband and I will be visiting London May 16-19, 2015. We had planned to visit Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament on Monday, May 18th. How does the opening of the new Parliament affect tourists? Will we still be able to tour Westminster?
Assuming one party gets enough votes to form a government, the first day of sitting will be 18 May so you should still be able to tour as nothing particularly will happen on this day apart from swearing in the MPs and electing a Speaker. If no party gets a majority even enough to form a coalition, the house may not be sitting.
The State Opening is 27 May when the Queen reads the Queen's Speech - travel chaos around Westminster and high security at this time.
