Mobile phone usability in France, Switzerland, and Italy

We will travel to the 3 countries soon. I have an android phone; provider is US Cellular. What is the best way to ensure we can make calls while there? To restaurants, tourist sites, possibly call the US? Thank you for any advice you may offer.

First, read up on cell phones in Europe in the Travel Tips section of this site. Also, do you have a SIM phone that is unlocked and can be used in Europe? Some US Celluar phones are not compatible with Europe's GSM system.

What does your carrier offer? I have AT&T, they offer 3 packages, $30, $60 & $90 for 30-days. I select the one I think will meet my needs, usually the $60. Then use my iPhone as I do at home. I program the hotel(s), apartment agency and or restaurants that I will be using prior to leaving. As well as addresses, easy to delete when return home.

Definitely talk to your provider - and do it in person. I can't tell you how many stories I hear from friends about people who called in, thought they understood the system/charges for using their phone in Europe and then came back to 100s of dollars in usage charges.

I use TMobile and I never love them more than when I land in Europe and I get their text message that says "Welcome to France - calls are 20 cents and your data and texting are free." I'm here now and using my phone just like I use it at home. Data is at 2G, which is fine, but a bit slower than I'm used to. But when I open maps to locate where I am , it's fast enough for me to work with.

lp,

To begin with, you might find it helpful to have a look at this US Cellular web page....

If your phone is newer, it should be capable of working in Europe. Using the phone only for calls and texts will be the cheapest option. If you add data, the cost will be higher. You could consider buying a small data plan, but leaving the data blocked unless necessary. You can easily access E-mail or surf the net in those areas where you have Wi-Fi available.

Have a chat with US Cellular rep's, as they'll be able to give you a good idea of the costs.
