Eurail.com now sells a mobile version of their Global pass that you download to an app on your phone. What are the pros and cons of that compared to a paper pass?
I don’t know but will find out in about 3 months when we download the ones we bought over winter! We’re headed out in late August. Never used the mobile ones before but glad to this time, less paper to drag around and keep track of.
I purchased one when they were having the huge sale in March and crossing my fingers things open up enough in time for me to activate it. I cannot really see any cons to the mobile version over the paper one except for that you always need to keep your phone charged but I don’t think that’s really an issue for most people. The pros are that you have access to your pass instantly after purchase and don’t have to wait for the pass in the mail. The Eurail app allows for you to search for train schedules and save journeys without the use of internet and you can link your mobile pass to the app so that it’s all in one place. You are able to book reservations right from the app and you don’t have to keep filling out a paper every time you want to hop a train.
Some basic advice that has survived the pandemic: Train travel's best friend is The Man in Seat 61. His voluminous site will help you understand, and shop for, the Eurail pass in any form.

Especially note that high-speed trains often require a reservation which must be bought separate from the Eurail pass. Bought; it is not included in the pass.
The Man in Seat 61 is the best train travel website ever (IMHO) ... I've spent countless hours (days?) just reading through everything ... a must read when planning your trip by train.
